Domestic Travel Insurance

Hi

We are going away for a week to Tassie in October. Can you recommend any travel insurance policies which may be good value? Also, are there any things we should look out for when purchasing travel insurance?

Thanks

Is typically never buy travel insurance for domestic travel: is there a reason why you think you need it?

We will be camping around tassie. I think it might be a good idea to get covered if there are any delays and we miss flights and for damage to goods (wet weather).

  • We usually go with Travel Insurance Direct
    decent covers at competitive prices

    Domestic Travel Insurance
    - Covers car rental excess (i.e. you don't need to get the insurance cover through the car rental place which is usually a rip off)
    - Covers missed / delayed flight
    - covers for lost / stolen belongings (optional)
If you are only doing it for health insurance don't worry as you are covered everywhere in Australia anyway (assuming you are a resident)

Agree with Hiroko, TID is the way to go.

But Jetstar would've paid some compensation in the end.

For me personally I have literally saved $1000s on car, home and other insurances by being 'self insured'.

I'm just convinced that insurance is paying for other people's misfortunes (or negligence), and a lot of middle-men who facilitate the process and prey upon people's fears. Going though a claims process can be a hassle too, and 99% of the time there's an excess, whereas if I am self-insured then it's pretty straight-forward.

      • What do you mean by 'self-insured'?

        • I take on the risk myself, rather than outsourcing it by taking up a policy with Allianz or some other insurance company.

Basically, I am happy to have no insurance for my car etc and it's saving me $1000s. Sometimes I do have insurance but I try to avoid it as much as possible.
