New house. New internet plan.

Hello,

I'm about to move in with my girlfriend and her brother and we are looking at getting a new internet plan. I need to get something fast enough to stream netflix at 1080p- but that's probably the most strenuous thing we'll do. Currently living in Brisbane and looking to spend around $60/M - can we get the NBN here or will I have to go ADSL2? Unlimited or high amounts of data are preffered. I call on my fellow ozbarginers to help me find the perfect plan! Please help!

I have Dodo ADSL2+ for $59.95. 1440p can be streamed perfectly ever since I am using my own modem router (TP Link D9). Their modem was crap. I know most people don't like Dodo but I think that's because of the customer service. Internet service is just as good as any other ISP, for me at least. I get around 15-20 Mbps at any time of the day.

TP Link offers similar service at similar price.

If you are lucky enough to get NBN, go for it. It will set you back another $10-20 per month though.

Try to get no-lock in contract if you can.

    • 15-20 Mbps for adsl 2+ is too good to be true. Usually it's about 7- 8 Mbps

      • Factors vary this but 20 not unheard of. I was close to exchange in Bayside Melbourne and got 20 every day of the week!

      • This is what I am getting at this very time and there are other members in my house using internet at this time. 17 Mbps

      • My modem syncs at 26000 odd :)

ADSL sucks balls. Get a cable or NBN connection or go home. If you are already home, leave, then go home.

  • Try and avoid ADSL at all costs.

  • 5km from the cbd and no Nbn, what's my next best option?

Search google for "can I get telstra cable" and find the "check your address to see if it can get cable" on the telstra/bigpond site page and enter your address. If it doesn't come up you can try some of your neighbours addresses - if they don't come up then you cannot get telstra cable.

      Do the same for optus.

(In the gummints crazy internet adventures that we're all putting up with "cable" is different to "nbn" even though if your in an NBN area you may get NBN through a cable … depending … thanks Turnbullshit)

Telstra cable is pretty goddamn good although they'll try and upsell you or lower the value you get at every turn: the best price you can get is $109.95 for 1000GB 100Mbit down 2.5 Mbit up uploads are counted towards allowance. After you reach your limit it's shaped to 256kbps for the rest of the month. Just constantly ask for that price and specify what you want for the price (speed: 100Mbit, allowance: 1000GB) and they'll insist it doesn't exist and then if you keep asking they give in. Takes a while :|

No experience with Optus cable. You can only get one or the other if your in a "cable" area.

If you cannot get cable or nbn then I'm afraid you might be stuck with ADSL (barring any wireless service which i know little about).

      • With Telstra you can also double your monthly data 3 times a year which is handy if you go over.

I don't have the 100Mbps connection, but still achieve pretty good speeds on cable (~35Mbps), which should be $20 less than the 100Mbps connection.

  • well Brisbane is a big place, so we don't know what service you can get.

Put your address in to see if you can get NBN. If not see if you can get cable. Telstra cable is very good.
