Gym Etiquette Issues in Werribee, What to Do ?

Hey guys, I hope you are all enjoying Grand Final Holiday (VIC)!

I signed to a Gym Membership here in Werribee and, I must say, it was a good deal… but now I am sort of regretting it because of the hygienic issues I see at the place: people don't use towels, don't clean after themselves, come to work out using their dirty work clothes (i.e. a painter was using the bench yesterday and left paint on the bench press). Even worse, even the Personal Trainers work out without a towel!

I talked to the management and ask them to enforce the worldwide-well unknown-common sense Gym Etiquette, but they told me that "it is difficult to do that at the moment" and "I will explain to my staff the rules and let's see what happens". Seriously?

I want to get your opinion about Gym Etiquette wherever you live in Australia because I want to know if I am correct on my concerns or if I am a precious-lunatic.

Cheers

    Firstly, Werribee has etiquette?
My girlfriend and I were getting rowdy in the car some time back, and she lent over and whispered in my ear, kiss me where it smells, so i drove her to Werribee……..

Ok, OP you are spot on. Universal rule to towel equipment and clean up. If management gave you that response and paint on stuff, etc, then I would ask for refund on those grounds and go elsewhere.

Or play by their rules and think of some dirty shit to do to the equipment so people can see. Something will surely give then!

Hey mate, yeah… look, I think that this will be my best option, I just need to go around Werribee for visits and see what the natives do, because down here is disgusting.

      • Yeah bummer you have had this. Ask for refund and find another place. Seems like a culture is bred there and won't change anytime soon!

        • From the sound of things, that's not the only thing bred there.

        • @tshow: ha ha. Its easy to make fun of them. I keep saying the only good thing that comes from shit is mushrooms!

As long as you use a towel yourself you wont get anything on you.

    • So use the towel to cover someone's sweat and then remove yours with the same towel? Sure why not?

I bring my towel to the gym but as I also see people that don't bring towels I just use mine to myself, not to put on top of benches like most people do. My gym has chemicals and handtowels around, I go and grab some to clean it out before and after.

Thank god I don't have the towel issue at my gym… the only issues I have is you can never find the bloody DB you need… no one ever puts them back on the rack or when they do its always in the wrong place

Werribee - well, that's the problem.

    :P

  • Bring a box of wet wipes then.. Knock yourself out

  • Definitely not a Werribee problem. I've been to a number of different gyms in Melbourne (YMCA, Good Life, smaller gyms) and almost everybody doesn't use a towel or wipe down after. Just used to it now. My other gripes (at Good Life currently): no one ever unloads their weights, men's locker room rubbish overflowing with paper towels (every time I push down the rubbish), not flushing toilets.

I have been to many gyms throughout Australia and Goodlife are probably the worst.
I used to belong to a hardcore gym on the Gold Coast frequented by MMA fighters, bikies and wannabe gangsters and their etiquette was first class.
Goodlife is staffed by kids who have no idea and no motivation. Now it's gone 24X7 and everyone comes wandering in out of hours.

    Double edged sword for me..

I like the place nice and clean but I have been known to sometimes sniff or lick a bench after some hottie has used it without wiping it down..

It's cheaper and easier to not go to the Gym.

    • How is that?

      • +3

No need to pay for any membership and you never even have to go there.

Sorry mate, there is a reason why people go to the gym… there is a reason mate.

        • Yeah, but then you have to start collecting fedoras.

  • I just came back from the gym and the same thing… people were looking at me because I was cleaning after using the equipment.

Ah, also… I asked one Personal Trainer why he does not use a towel when he works out and he said "there is no such thing as gym etiquette mate, people should be able to do whatever they want"….so, the prick does not understand that, 1. we are all paying to use a single piece of equipment, and 2. that Werribee is a diverse area, lots of Indians, tradies, chinese… which means a greater chance of finding people with different views on personal hygiene (for example, some Indians I know told me that they grew up without a loo around).

    I am gonna get out

You don't fit in. Goto a female only gym. There's such a thing

      • "there is no such thing as gym etiquette mate, people should be able to do whatever they want"

True to a certain extent, you can do what ever you want but you are also sharing the equipment and others are helping you keep the gym running, so at least be considerate to them.

I do agree with you though, OP you don't fit in if you care when others look at you for cleaning the equipment. Do what you think its best, screw what the other guys think.

        • I don't give a damn about people looking at me, what puzzles me is that it seems they find it weird to see someone cleaning. Thats all.

        • +1

@EtaCarinae: Who cares what they find weird lol, just do what comes nature to you.

      • now I must say that your comment was the most mature of all comments here. Congratulations.

        • Thanks. Better next time check out the gym for a week prior.

Not all unisex gyms are the same despite it being that.

There's no need for that attitude. This is the 21st century, if you hadn't noticed.

No amount of sugar coating will help. Oh, everyone else at the gym is obviously staring for a reason.

Inside they are thinking.. GET A LOAD OF THIS.

PT already sugar coated his response because they were astute enough with OP's problems. Inside he is thinking like everyone else around him.

How else can it be put?

Will not fit in with this gym's culture.

    • Wot

    • I think the loo thing basically comes from Mahathma Gandhi's instigation for the natives to shit on the roads so that colonials would leave the country, I hear some still practice that :S

PS: no offense meant to anyone, just stating facts

      • I hear they have "designated shitting streets". It's not anyone can take a dump anywhere - shitting etiquette

        • lol yeah, rail lines seems to be designating shitting streets by default ;)

You are too soft for this world.

    • he said "there is no such thing as gym etiquette mate, people should be able to do whatever they want"

Bash him in the back of the head with a dumbell. If he remains conscious enough to ask why, you can feed that line back to him.

    • multiculturalism brings in its host of issues and is not the road to a utopian society ?? thats heresy!

      • +1

I'm white and don't use a towel. I blame multiculturalism!

  • I don't use a gym towel, but my sweat only equates to a light mist under my shirt. I don't get wet hands, and don't leave any liquid on the equipment. I usually start my routine with a 15 minute run, then do weights for an hour. Some of us don't sweat that much, we don't need towels.

    • Yeah, I'm one of those people too. If I find I've left sweat marks on whatever equipment I've used, I get some of the supplied sanitising wipes to clean the equipment, but generally I don't need to.

  • Some people just don't bother at all if they think someone else will clean up. I go to a Plus Fitness 24/7. People regularly spray piss over the toilet & surrounding floor, don't flush their piss away, etc. Some have a shower & leave every square cm of floor space in the changeroom awash with f ing water afterwards.

The manager told me he has someone who takes a 20 minutes shower every day they come in & use all the liquid soap then ask him to refill it. He reckons they are whacking off in there. I am sure plenty of guys pee in it. The changerooms are just rank.

Most gyms get a number of boofhead types. I thought a 24/7 gym might not suit them, but they seem to becoming more common than when I joined 2+ years ago. Best solution I have found is go at a quiet time to have fewer of these tossers to deal with. You minimise contact & avoid alot of the hygiene & other problems when there are less people around.

  • I don't got to a gym, for I don't think some people would have Etiquette there.
