Bought a HP ultrabook battery from Aliexpress, arrived slightly bent and dented. What do?

So I bought this laptop battery from Aliexpress for HP Elitebook.

It arrived today but the first signs of concerns was that it was shipped in a fairly unprotected satchel. with no bubble wrap, nor any rigid cardboard protection that would prevent it from being bent or sat on.

The first signs of trouble was this flimsy cardboard box

Notice the lack of sufficient packaging and foam protection. Listing mentioned that there was two pieces of foam that sandwiched the battery. However, there was only 1 piece on the bottom, and there was no larger box that housed the smaller box you saw here.

The battery itself looks like the real deal.

But if you look closely, you can see some damage to the battery itself, plus it is also slightly bent downwards

I'm writing to complain as well:

So right now I'm sitting here wondering what I should do with this battery. Should I stick it into my laptop and do a test, hoping it doesn't go thermonuclear, Samsung Galaxy Note 7 style? Or just recycle this battery?

  • stick it in your HP.

batteries like that have some flex in them (I've replaced and swapped over plenty of Iphone, ipad, surface pro, etc batteries) and have bent batteries and then put them in another device (same model) and they have been fine.

    • Even bulges and indents like those? The biggest dent measures around 1mm (variance from the surrouding) and there are several bulges (around 4~5).

What are the bulges anyway? Are they trapped gases in between the cathode layers or electrolytes?

  • I got a battery that looked like it had melted in the sun like a chocolate bar from ebay once.

Sent them a photo, got a refund straight away.

From the photos, I wouldn't try to put that in my laptop…
