macbook pro retina 15" (2012) for $700?

My friend sold me his macbook pro retina 15" (2012) for $700. I'm wondering if this was a good deal? He told me I could return it if I wanted to.

What are your thoughts ozbargin?

  • Wow! That's pretty good. Bought a late 2013 13" 6 months ago for $900.

If you really wanted to, you could probably sell it on Ebay and profit.

    • Oh so its an alright deal? Phew thats good to know.

My other friend from work told me that I was getting ripped off lol. He said that with the same money, I could've gotten a better windows machine capable of of gaming. Also he mentioned that there is a refresh in october so the prices for used macbooks will crash.

Anyways thank god it wasnt a bad price… it was kinda an impulse buy and my ozbargain spirit kept nagging me if I got a deal or not all week lol :D

You probably could've got a similar Windows machine capable for gaming, However, it would not retain it's value as well nor would the build quality be as good.

        • Yeah I just do light gaming like league so I thought this would be perfect for me since I dont think you could get a machine with a display of that resolution for a similar price. The screen looks amazing! It feels as if I could reach into the screen and touch things lol.

Btw do you use your laptop for gaming? If you do, is it usually at the default resolution or do you turn the display settings down? I'm not sure if changing the resolution will increase fps or not.

        • +1

@Feeblely: I use it for light gaming and emulation of Wii/Gamecube.
I usually leave the screen resolution of the MacBook at default, but inside the game i turn it down to 720P.
The screen on the Macbooks is amazing.
You won't find anything better than 1080P on a Windows machine in this price range.

        • @nicholasfrawley: Yeah I've done a bit of looking around and can't seem to find any used 4k/QHD laptops for $700.

    • I bought a 2015 model 3 months ago for 1100$. Felt like a good deal, relatively.

      • whoa nice. Was it the integrated or discrete graphics version?

        • +1

It was the most basic version. I don't think the 13" comes with discrete graphics at all.

  • The battery life is probably going to be turd. Shoulda got a Windows machine with a 6th Gen Intel Processor.

    • yeah I only get 5.5 hours of use :(
wish it was a bit longer.
Could you recommend me some windows machines? I can still return the macbook to my friend if I don't want it.

      • +1

nah keep the MBP. youre probably gonna get similar batt performanace for 700 buying a new windows laptop. eg: lenovo e560 new has like 6 hours. my only gripe is with some occasional gaming, iris handles well with basic shit but ofc with a mac youre gonna have to bootcamp or live with it

        • I don't have an iris graphics :(.

Unfortunately mines the older one. it has a intel HD4000 and a nvidia gtx 650m.
Yeah I installed windows 10 onto it as soon as I got it lol. Trying to find the right settings to get 60fps gaming atm.

        • Dell Latitudes have a battery life above 8 hours

        • Not sure where you get those figures from
I get 10 hours out of my E560 every day and thats with general usage of the unit
service manuals, firmware etc, some tethering

I do agree though macbook laptop batteries seem to be built better than their windows counterparts but it all depends of course

I went with the e560 based on the fact is has intel HD graphics and also a Radeon M370 which runs most games quite fine at basic settings

        • @shawncro 222:
used one exclusively for about 4 months.
aside from being plagued with software and touchpad issues, it was alright i guess, pretty powerful
that '6 hours' is from my normal usage, which is probably more draining than the everyday joe with matlab and shit. current work rmbp does about 8 doing the same tasks

          @KeplersLaws:

I will agree the touchpad is a little mongrel sometimes
I use a BT mouse most of the time anyway

I formatted it out of the box, threw the 1tb into my xbox
put a 500gb SSD into it with Windows 10, has been great ever since, Lenovo stock OS is vomit

I find it may depend on the battery and conditioning over 4 months that yields different results
I tend to use 30% brightness indoors / AC wifi / BT only on and tethered to my galaxy s7 edge
          Audio on
CPU at about 30% and I get good results

Its not a bad laptop for the $$$

Got mine for under $1000 with 16gb ram, 2x2 wifi, and 3D Camera

For a macbook pro with retina display, that seems pretty good - But yeah its going to be a bit heavy, with a short battery life - But the build quality is really good and Mac's have started to win me over, especially when you link them with your iPhone. Shit in my life is flowing better simply due to buying a mac…. facepalm I can't believe I'm almost advertising for apple here lol

That's because most Mac Users do simple tasks.

      • Oh, No you didn't!

      • hey niner im a progressive greens-voting girl socialism is my jam :-) my macbook air and zaraffas coffee are right next to me and can i just say: youve hit the nail right on the head!!

        • You're making my skin crawl with your hipster ways.

I think I'm allergic to your kind.

It's probably why my partner is a conservative liberal party voter.

Oh and I'm voting yes for the that stupid plebiscite that won't achieve anything. Assuming it happens in February next year.

        • niner you are deep.
KeplersLaws; I am also sipping away having recently brewed a cup of coffee (although at home), Labour voter here… I once did vote Liberal, and as a result J.H. came into Power.

        • it appears my sarcasm was not strong enough

        • @KeplersLaws:

Sorry, sarcasm is foreign to me. You hit the nail on the head with your attempt at sounding like a hipster.

      • meh - you may be right ; But the point is I reckon most Mac users are really enjoying the use of their macbook or device and the powerful simplicity that comes with them

My experience has been with Windows computers for years and years, building several desktop computers and using and fixing like 5-6 Windows or Linux running laptops.

I've always enjoyed tinkering with technology and software in the past - But now that I mainly need to do simple tasks, and have a really portable and usable laptop device - Im finding my Macbook Air extremely enjoyable. I don't miss the hours of setting up a windows machine at all.

I haven't had to mess around with drivers, software, glitches, crashes and messy desktop crap AT ALL. I've simply installed the 'apps' that I need to use, and this little thing lets me tap away for 5-7 hours without a charge, all while I've got 60+ procrastination tabs open in my internet browser. It hasn't gotten hot yet, and it doesn't mind me running a few music and photo editing apps in the back ground while I type away in microsoft word.

        /shameless review of a used 2013 macbook air :)

  • How much it was brand new in 2012?

    • It was AUD$2499

Feeblely, is this your first Mac?.

One thing i like about APPLE/Macs is the support "I" have received.

I have 3 laptops and a Mac mini, one of my MBPs is 4 years old, and is currently waiting for me to pick up from Apple store Highpoint, $900+ of repairs after Logic board failure, they decided to replace it at no cost to me!.

I know Samsung (when they made laptops), would not do so nor most 'Windows' computer makers.

I have taken my iPads for service/repairs at no cost ((Genius bar)just by booking via Apple online or also can be done in-store), I took a phone to Samsung Highpoint for repair quote 2 years ago, I had to pay around $60.00 for repair quote!.

$700.00 for your purchase IMO is on the good side of a fair price.

    • Nope. I had a 2010 13" mbp but I wanted something bigger with a nicer screen and to be able to play some light games as well ^_^

Yeah, I've been looking through gumtree today and noticed that most 15" retina's (2012/2013) are selling for $1200 on average so I think $700 is ok.

    • Since you brought up service topic, I just want to ask you a question. What is general warranty period for macs? And is there any extended warranty? I am tired of this windows glitches( have DELL 7559 for 7 months) and wanted to buy Mac for piece of mind.

      • +1

Hey Indi24, warranty is 12 months, plus the statutory… Im not quite sure about which makes items worth more than $1K (?) 2 years.
My experience with the Apple store is that if it seems you've been looking after your machine, they'll look after you as per my experience above.
My MBP is always in a protective shell etc.

        • Thanks for the reply. when you say statutory means, is it any specific to Australia(Like UK, i heard something is special in UK)?

i am tired of these windows machines ditching me when i need them most. so, decided to buy new Macbook pro line up and eagerly waiting for event. started reading more about apple hence these questions.

  • Thanks for the input guys! Decided to keep it. Managed to get decent framerates on gaming and the screen is really nice.
