Target Microwave - Rejecting Warranty As Over 12 Months

Hi all

I purchased a Target branded microwave last year - 21/07/2015. Comes with 12 months warranty.
It's been a year and 2 months ago.
Though it heats up, rotating motor fails to work.

Called up Customer service and they are asking me to check with the local store if they can honour a refund/exchange.

I've called up stores which has this item in stock and they are not willing to exchange/refund.
Need suggestions if ACCC warranty laws help in this case ?

  • don't even think target still have microwaves (nothing appears to available on their website), so getting an exchange will be a bit difficult.

    how much was it btw?

    edit founded it: https://www.target.com.au/p/target-tesmo1-compact-microwave/…

just wondering if the manual mentions 12months warranty too?

    $59 for a microwave.. wow.

Do you not think 1 year 2 months is reasonable for a $49 (the price on 21/7/15) microwave?

    • ozBargainer in me says NO

      • +3

Did the ozBargainer in you pay on your annual fee free credit card with free extended warranty?

        • I have always read about extended warranty coming from credit card but dont know what card offers this. Could you please elaborate?

        • A lot of cards require you to pay an excess to make an extended warranty claim so wouldn't be worth it here

        • @nahkk:

Most platinum and higher Visa cards offer extended warranty - although some charge excess. For a no annual fee card with no excess I'd recommend the Amex Express Essential Card. Their customer service is A+ too. 28 Degrees is also a good option if you're looking for a Visa.

        • @vox:Thanks for the info. Is there any benefit selecting AMEX over Visa? I've observed a note of "AMEX not accepted" at some retailers.

        • @nahkk:

Point value is usually higher than Visa/MC, the particular card I mentioned has free smartphone screen insurance which I haven't seen any other cards offer, and the customer service is usually a lot better than banks. They also do monthly(?) statement credits (e.g. spend $20 at your local coffee shop, get $10 back). Only real downside is as you mentioned, they're not accepted everywhere, so it's best to have an alternative.

        • @vox: Thanks for sharing this.

  • Is your time spent on this worth more than $59?

      Yes.

    "Comes with 12 months warranty.

It's been an year and 2 months ago."

I'd accept it's faulty and buy myself a good microwave- Panasonic or Sharp.

Otherwise, buy an identical microwave and then return the faulty one. I wouldn't do it but it achieves your goal- replace your microwave out of warranty.

Also achieves goal of committing fraud.

      • As I said I wouldn't do it.

        • good luck finding one in store, as it out of stock. the time and effort to find one in store to consider if it worth going thru.

        • @godofpizza: You'll find they cycle their models every year or two anyway in order to minimise this tactic…

  • Call up ACCC or whomever it is that manages Consumer Law. They will determine if your claim is "reasonable" considering the cost of the item and if it is force Target to replace it.

No idea if it's "reasonable", you have to call.

So adorable that you think this actually happens.

    • Didn't mean to reply! Sorry!

Well this is EXACTLY how things will go.

You will contact ACCC and they will tell you to make an application online.

You'll go online and spend a few minutes registering a username and navigating through the claim process.

You'll explain the problem and what outcome you would like.

You will then proceed to attach your receipt and other documents you plan on relying on in court.

Then you'll get to the last screen where they will ask for some money. (In your case $61, based on Victorian Civil Administration Council).

If, for some bizarre reason, you decide to persue legal action you take a day off work (they tell you time and date for your court appearance), get into the city (train ticket\parking), the Judge will say the warranty period has expired and now you have to cover the defendants legal fees.

    All the best

i would let it go for this price. However, if you have time and energy to spend, have a chat with consumer affair as well:

Really? A $59 microwave and you expect the ACCC to support you outside of its 12 month warranty?

Definitely not worth the time or effort. Buy a new one.

Update : I took the microwave to Target, Burwood(NSW) and the supervisor contacted online team and they offered to exchange or for a store credit.

Since the microwave is now $59, I got $59 store credit. That is $10 + an year of usage.

Supervisor is aware of the fact that I paid only $49(on my invoice).. she said that the system price can't be overridden.

And you can take solace in knowing that your story will be posted in the staff bulletin as Stingy Customer of the Month

      • +3

        Honestly,I don't think staff care

      • +4

i read it as ozBargainer of the month.

        • +2

I read it as role model! :)

Personally I think it's not unreasonable for a $50 microwave to be expected to last at least two years.
