Windows 10 USB External Drives Keep Going to Sleep

Previously in Windows 8 my external hard drives keep going to sleep because Windows 8 kept shutting them down if there was no activity. There was a fix for this and it worked. However upgrading my notebook to Windows 10 the same thing happens again. I've searched around for a fix to this problem, however none of the fixes I have seem to work. Has anyone a solution for this? It's driving me crazy that the drive will go to sleep and then when I need to copy a file across it takes anywhere from 5-10 seconds to re-fire up again and transfer the file. Thanks in advance!

  • Insufficient info, needs what you have tried, eg "power save/battery settings set to 'never turn off' failed"

  • Mine does this too on my Mac server, exactly as you describe. If I ever find out how to fix I'll let you know.
Any idea what your original fix was?

  • Thanks for the replies,

I have tried almost everything including messing around with the registry, adjusting power save options (set all options to never turn off and it still does it!)

The solution for windows 8 was below

The second option of modifying part of the registry fixed the issue in Windows 8 but there is no workaround in windows 10.
