Warranty on Existing Solar System on a Purchased Home

Hi team, to keep it simple, I am dealing with a company that I am trying to claim warranty for a faulty solar inverter. It was a Chinese brand (Aerosharp) which the manufacturer went bust years ago, but nevertheless the installer still should honour their 10 year warranty as they supplied it.

I've been to the local Consumer Affairs office and after their advice, I have written to tell them about rights under the Consumer Law (Competition and Consumer Act 2010) and now they have come back saying that the warranty is only applicable to the person/people who paid for the system, not the people (me) who bought the house from them.

Has anyone had experience in (a) claiming warranty on their solar system after buying a home with it existing, or (b) if you work for a solar/green energy company, is it normal for the warranty to only be applicable to the initial buyer?

To me it doesn't sound right. If you buy a Toyota with 2 year warranty and sell it prior to 2 years, the warranty moves on to the next owner. In my case, perhaps I don't know the original Terms and Conditions and in fact may be written in the purchase contract… although the contract page does not say anything on it.

ask the old owner to make claim.

  • I can understand the installer trying to get out of it, after all it will come out of their pocket, not the manufacturer.
