Installing a New Phone Line Suggestions

Hi all,

I recently moved houses where the only telephone port is downstairs. My PC setup is upstairs which i'd prefer to be connected via a wired connection for faster downloads/gaming.
I'm looking to installing another telephone port where i hook the modem upstairs are there any suggestions on technicians that dwell in this space for the suburb of Vermont
Any recommendations for technicians that dwell in this space? Roughly how much am i looking at?

Thanks

    Ethernet over Power.
    Leave modem downstairs.

Also, what is wrong with WiFi?
WiFi will be faster than your internet connection (unless you got some badass NBN speed connection). Wired PC to Modem will not get you faster downloads.

    • I heard it cuts the network speed by at least 1/3

      • even if that is the case, it is probably still faster than your ADSL/cable speed.

        what is your speed?

        • Please see my comment below. Ill update with the wireless network speeds when i'm home

        • @rakkihizoku:

You'll update with internet speeds when at home

        • @battler: 4mb/s. So looks like either a EOP adapter or Wireless NIC wouldn't do that much damage

      • Do you have 100mbit net? Then maybe you could care.

  • Elecrrician with the appropriate open registration license.

But as above mentioned ethernet over power will be your best bet and i have it at my house and its good enough for gamming and the like.

Depending on what sort of construction you have it could be really easy or really hard to do it. Our house is pretty easy to run cables around due to access from the roof space.

Keep the phone line where it is and install some cat6 cable and a router if necessary for a wired network.

I initially had Wifi problems after cable got installed at my place due to using Wifi as the router was located far away in the lounge.

My wireless network adapter card indicated 4-5 bar signal, so I never thought it was the problem. So as you said, when playing games, it would just completely freeze, the signal completely drops for a few seconds and then resumes. Never indicated that the net dropped out though. It was probably some sort of interference or weak signal that is so negligible they couldn't indicate it.

Then I purchased a new wifi adapter and haven't had a problem since.

Speeds wise, using Wifi wont slow you down at all. So I would recommend just getting a better wireless adapter.

I'm currently looking at a Wireless NIC based off everyones suggestions. Would i need to look for a pcie one? Or would a pci compatible one suffice? Is there any recommendations? Or would you recommend using power over ethernet?

  • If you have a store that is not too far out of your travels, get a set of Ethernet over power plugs and try them, and ask if you can return them. For $100 and 1 minute of your time you should find that is all you need.

  • Either put a phone or ethernet jack in, done, it'll be the same price as those stupid Ethernet over Power adapters.

    • You don't even know the house and whether or not the ability to put in New wiring is easy or hard! Plus you think an electrician will only charge around $100 to install even a small length of cable and terminate it for use whilst also supplying all that is needed?

      • Cost me that to put it between floors in a 30 year old house.

        • No way! You got an approved and registered person to install cable in your house, terminate it with relevant plugs at both ends and it only cost you $100? Please provide info on this I could send much work their way!
