Does Anyone on Here Do Chrisco Orders?

I got an email this week saying the new Chrisco catalogue is due out in a couple of weeks.
I've been ordering for over 10 years now.
I know a lot of people say that it is expensive but I find the convenience at Christmas time excellent. Around that time all the big bills all seem to arrive and are due in early December.
What are your thoughts?

You're better to set aside the $ amount of the hamper.
At Christmas just order everything online using coles or woolies - delivered.
Done and will be cheaper and just as convenient.

I don't think you'll find many Chrisco fans here.

You're locking away your money for an entire year and relying on Chrisco to deliver (which they spectacularly failed to do a couple of years ago). The items in their catalogue are more expensive than just getting them on special at a local supermarket. For a company that claims to save you money they really don't.

The only real benefit I can see is if you truly cannot control your spending then the forced savings model of Chrisco is a good idea.

ummm looking at the hampers, there seems to be two of everything. Surely it would be quicker to add the 20 different items into coles or woolies search, and then get it delivered.

Excellent point. with supermarkets doing home delivery you could literally flip through the costco hamper catalogue and get it delivered for half price from Coles or Woolworths.

Chrisco is designed for people who cannot plan for Christmas and thus will have no money to buy a turkey and sugar snacks.

It is a mystery, after all, when Christmas happens ever year. We struggle through day to day life and then suddenly BAM, out of the blue and with no warning retailers tell us it's Christmas tomorrow and poor consumers have no money for a Christmas dinner :-)

they are ridiculously overpriced for what you get

  • I know a lot of people say that it is expensive …
… because that is a fact.
… but I find the convenience at Christmas time excellent.
But you pay more for the "convenience".

This is ozbargain. Cristco is the opposite of a bargain.

You'd be much better off buying a Woolworths or Coles gift card each week and putting them away for Christmas.

Otherwise, maybe look at opening a Christmas account at one of the banks?

Seriously, these hamper schemes are an utter rip off. :(

Or you can give me the money for the hamper weekly.
I'll delivery the hamper to you at Christmas. =D

So in the interests of neutrality, i went on the woolworths page and added every item to the cart. In a few cases i made a reasonable brand substitution. Took about 10-15 minutes

Woolworths total cost: $348.89 (free delivery)

    Christco "Family Holiday Favourites": $10.84 * 54 = $585

    What i learnt:

    • There seemed to be very specific brands
    • Multiples of the same item, with different flavors: negating "2 for x" deals at checkout.
    • very little staple items, more focus on deserts i.e. flavoured drinking straws and snak paks.
    • More of a smaller quantity product, over a larger quantity item. i.e. 6 cans of coke vs 1 large bottle.
    • brands were listed in a way not to be easily copied into the woolworths page i.e. "Allen's Lollipops" are chupa chups.
    • Huge focus on getting the kids hyped up on sugar. 14 Litres of cottees cordial - that's 140L of cordial for the kids,
    • Half the stuff i wouldnt actually buy, even with kids. I wouldnt buy snak packs, and nutella, and chupa chups, and chocolate etc etc
    • No meat, vegetables etc. everything is long life stuff.

In all honesty, i'd go to coles or wollies, spend $200 on "real" food, spend $50 on "fun stuff" and leave satisfied.

*1100 woolworths points = ~$5 off your next shop.

Looks like Chrisco is a great way to load up on junk food at a high price. This appears to be the exact opposite of what poor people should be seeking.

I remember seeing the ads on tv, and they kind of reminded me of a way to spoil the kids and not be pictured as a bad mother. That's the impression i got anyway.

If I was so inclined, I'd get a boatload of cordial, coca-cola and chips from aldi ($30). The kids will be as high as a kite on sugar, and you wont see any difference from the above.

The rest i'd spend on actual food, not snacks/condiments/deserts

        • +5

no, you spend the rest on booze at aldi to dull the pain caused by the sugar crazed kids

    • you forgot to include the basket ;)
also can you post the link to which hamper you compared?

    • Good work.

I just did the same with this chocolate and lolly hamper.

      http://www.chrisco.com.au/Products/139-fun-choice-combo.aspx

Chrisco is asking $291. Adding the same items to a woolworths cart is $167. it would be even less if you did it over a couple of shops purchasing only when on special.

Anyone want to go to Woolies and Coles and tell them of a new business model for Christmas that will give them good cashflow?

  • +1

Aldi have great Xmas foods/Treats, better than anything you'll get at Coles and Woolies and cheaper too.

    • No Aldi in Darwin yet

  • to dear go to coles/woolies for half the price
