Have You Heard of Kids Cancer Research Trust?

Hi everyone, been on this site for ages but first time posting a topic!

I got door knocked today by this guy claiming from Kids Cancer Research Trust, he said he was collecting donation for this charity and showed me that the money would go help to fund cancer research, kids accommodation etc. And he said any donation is deductible for tax purpose.

He showed me those pre-printed receipt valuing $20, $10, $5 and $1.

So I happily gave him $2. But he wouldn't give me the receipt before I ask him, so I asked and he reluctantly gave me $2 receipt.

Those info are appeared on the receipt:

The Cancer & Bowl Research Association ate Kinds Cancer Research Trust

ANB 76273364366

Phone 1300 650 794

www.kidscancer.org.au

Licence No CFN 18083

So I went to ABN Lookup and checked its ABN number and it appears that it is not a Deductible Gift Recipient! http://abr.business.gov.au/SearchByAbn.aspx?SearchText=76273…

Then I started searching on google, and it appears that the head of this charity was been investigated by SA Police! http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/police-in…

I feel really upset now because my negligible $2 donation is probably wasted!

Dear follow Ozbargainers, have you heard this charity before?

Will you feel comfortable to give money to whom knock your door claiming to be from one charity and take cash???

Don't feel bad. Giving money to a charity you don't know about is worse than giving to no charity at all imo.

Every time I encounter a door knocker I tell them that I only make online donations to charities.

    • Total agree, please donate, just do some homework before you do to avoid shocks and anger later…….

  • That sounds dodgy as to me. I wouldn't have been bothered to do all that research for a $2 possible deduction, good on you. Thanks for the heads up. I rarely give to charities that knock on the door (except the Salvo's door knock appeal) or those that call on the phone, mainly because they see you as an easy mark and constantly call you.

  • At least it was only $2, be thankful they didn't sting you for more.

Did he stay at your door? Please tell me you didn't invite him in for $2

    • $2 long time…….

Dont donate to the chuggers man! Lol they are evil money hungry scum, using any tactic to seperate you from your cash for commission.

Anyway… Always donate direct to a charity, they go as far as to fly these people to aus from UK ect to chugg us. I refuse to donate to any cause that chuggs me on principal

I had to google chugger, I have never heard that term before. Live and learn

      • chuggers

Slippery Fish knows what time it is.

        • Yeah me too I had to look it up. I thought it was a shortened version of choad juggler….

        • @dlf73: rofl ive never heard cj before, we are all learning.

        • @Slippery Fish: Gotz to lernz something new everyday. Ha ha. But seriously the chuggers, I dont personally dislike them, I believe they are trained to not be completely transparent. If they were it would cost their company money……..

  • I also avoid donating directly, and always ask for a link. Once a young man knocked and he asked for donations to Children with disabilities www.hwns.com.au he even wanted a monthly donation but I said no, but once I did my research I found the charity worth it. I did donated two times I don't have an idea about the tax though, but they sent too much mails with stories and pictures which I saw just marketing and wasting money rather than looking for new people, so yeah. It's hard for charities to get money since Gov. don't support them and only people who suffers would know the value of such charities

I recently posted here about the Allanah and Madeline Foundation. It seems that it is very common that companies are employed by charities to 'raise awareness' of the charity by being the public face on the street and asking for donations, as the charities are not skilled or have the staff to do so!
The company doing quite a few of these is APPCO.
If you google them you will find some interesting reading.
Points to note that if you opt for a regular payment plan, it may be possible that your entire first year's of donations go to APPCO, and not one cent gets to the charity until second year.
As I said in previous post, ask questions about how much percentage goes to charity, is it tax deductible, are they volunteers, which company do they represent, and do not be pressured to donate on the spot. If you feel you want to donate do some research and donate directly.

Do not be put off donating, just be smarter on how you do it. If you knew the majority of your donation lines the pocket of a marketing company rather than the charity, would you still donate? Of course not, hence why this is cleverly held from you.
