Query about a Round The World Trip – in April/May 2017

In April we are considering going from Sydney to Perth (W.A.) for a Scrabble meeting during the Easter Weekend (14 to 18th April).

There will be a world scrabble competition in Malta from 28th April to 4th May which we would like to attend. Since we have not been to Europe before, we would like to spend several weeks in Spain/Portugal and since we are half way around the world, to continue across the Atlantic with a stop in North America and back to Sydney.

Our first query is about a reasonable ticket that would take us from Sydney to Perth and then somehow get to Malta. Then from, Malta possibly directly to France or Spain. We have seen round the world fares with three stop-overs – including one in Europe. Would that be logical?

We are seniors and would prefer to use major airlines when possible though we are also on a budget. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
