Prevention is better than a cure.

If you have a wandering toddler then those back straps work really well. Trackers aren't going to help if they wander onto the road and get hit by a car or snatched by a stranger.

    • That is true, I did buy him the back pack strap but he kept pulling the other way
He just likes to walk next to us
But I do want to give these trackers a go

      • My wife was keen on them as well. There seem to be a few new options on the market now but 2 years ago when we were looking they were expensive ~$200 for the tracker plus monthly sim/service costs and needed almost daily charging.

    • Only in the summer though;)

What's wrong with the strap? I don't think any less of a parent when I see those… kids are bloody quick.

What difference does the weather make?

And sorry but having a leash on your kid is ridiculous. Have 2 toddlers, perfectly able to deal with them.

    • Got 4 - managed to get all of them safely through toddler stage without leashing them like animals.

"leashing them like animals", seriously? My mother had 5 kids in 8 years and we were "leashed" when you were too young to have road sense. It is all very well to say that it looks odd but if it prevents your kid from running out on the road you will be grateful. It is easy for parents to get distracted and kids can be quick and being smug that you don't need the leash won't help you if the kid is hit by a car.

      • Not all toddlers are runners. My eldest would bolt in a random direction whenever he felt like it. Only way to control it would be to hold his hand or use a backpack leash.

Only lasted about 6 months and he out grew it.

Daily I see many walking the dogs without a leash. The Dogs seems well behaved as well.
    And now kids on leash!…

    • I saw a great ad one time that showed a young golden retriever and a young child, it said they both had the same amount of road sense. Dogs get distracted by other animals and children get distracted chasing balls. It certainly does happen and the outcome can be horrific.

  • The only person who needs tracking is you OP (Only in summer, obviously).

  • You can get things that can be used to find your keys/wallet etc which has a GPS and syncs with your phone, is that the sort of thing you're after?

I tend to agree with the general consensus here, I would never leash mine…but I'm paranoid even by hypervigilant standards, so I'm watching them like a hawk every time we're out, even in our own yard.

I wouldn't like to trust any sort of tracking device either, I think just being mindful & teaching them right from wrong on the fly is good enough…

Please no harmful comments, everybody is in tilted to have there say but I was hoping maybe someone had brought a tracker and had good things to say about it.. I personally don't see the back pack as "animal leash" anything that might save your child's life is better and if people look down on you for it then up with it,my son just didn't like it

Agree. This is a bargain community where people should be able to ask for advice about effective products at affordable prices. It doesn't need to be a judgement session. Anyone with kids knows that you question yourself enough let alone having cop it from strangers.

    • I can sympathise with you OP, my daughter is 2 and will not hold our hands when we're out. She just loves to run and explore and we tried the backpack as well but didn't like it.

I can see how this tracker would come in handy so hopefully someone out there might be able to assist you with your inquiry :)

Like you I didn't want to put a strap on the children but as toddlers they can sometimes get lost in a crowd. My wife has a disability so can't chase after them - she was terrified she'd lose one when she took them out to the local markets etc, so I looked into trackers. The wrist options looked fine but expensive so I went the cheapskate route in the end.

We bought cheap Nokia Lumia 520 and 530 phones for each of them (Windows Phone 8) for about $20, use an Aldi sim ($20 lasts one year as long as you also have wifi enabled on the phones for updates etc), and use the free Life360 app on the phone. The free version of Life360 gives you everything you need. THis would also work with a cheap android phone I'm sure.

We gave the kids a pouch (my daughter calls it her handbag) to wear when we're out so that it's more of a 'fashion accessory'.

On each of the phones we've made the start screen pictures of family members which link to their contact cards, so the kids (3 and 5) can now actually ring us if they get into trouble.

We don't use them very often, but it does make us feel a little safer when we take the kids out to evening events or to the markets.

    • My kids all use old phones on Aldi as well. Aged 6-8, they've learned how to use them properly. Come in handy a few times already.
