Advice Sending Money with PayPal in USD - Convert with PayPal or Credit Card (28 Degrees)

I just paid money with paypal in USD. There were two options:

a. Let Paypal convert USD into AUD and then you pay fees of USD 7. I think you pay from your Bank Account.

b. Paypal doesn't covert and let credit card convert (28 degrees) but the fees then went up to USD 22.

I didn;t look closely enough. Has anyone looked into this and what do they think is better option?

  • If you pay on eBay for either credit card or PayPal - they both are PayPal basically. So both are the same rate.

    • Sorry, not for ebay. This is for sending money overseas (gift to friend). We use this method for overseas developer.

  • You'll need to calculate costs yourself, as they will differ depending on the destination country. Keep in mind that the PayPal AUD => USD rate is rather poor - I think you lose some 3c/USD (3%) just in the conversion, which they do not show as an explicit fee.

Do the conversion using PayPal listed rates and add the bank payment fee from PayPal.

Do the conversion using MasterCard rates and add the credit card surcharge from PayPal.

Compare the two. Pick whichever one costs you less.

    • Thanks
