Casting iPhone 6 to Non-Smart TV

I have a friend who has no internet at home (beyond a measly data plan on her phone). She can download movies to her phone using the network at her work but wants to watch them on her tv. Can anyone recommend the best way to cast her phone to the tv? I tried Chromecast but that needed a network to connect with. Any other options?

Buy this - one end plugs into your phone, the other end you need to plug into a HDMI cable which goes straight into your tv:

I have a Chromecast - you cannot play videos which are stored on your iPhone on your tv through it. It is only good for casting apps you are streaming online to your tv, eg Netflix.

aliexpress sells "non-apple" branded ones for ~US$15 delivered

    • Ok, that could be an option too. Thanks!

    • There is an app that will do it, though the free version has limited functionality. (eg: you can only watch from the start to the end-not pause etc).

    Apple TV 3rd Gen

    • this. works without wifi

    • Good stuff, i'll give it a try

    • That's a very elaborate and expensive solution to the problem though… ~$90 for a device that you're only going to use a tiny amount of its features due to the lack of an internet connection.

A wired connection should be much cheaper, provided that you don't have to buy a genuine Apple cable that's equally expensive.

  • Which IPhone version are you using? I think there is a lightning to hdmi cable as well.

Has she tried throwing the phone at the TV?

    • No but i nearly did…

      • Does the tv have a usb port? or just HDMI and RGB connections?

        • Not too sure, i'll have to check next time. It definitely has HDMI because i plugged in my Chromecast to try it out. Is there an alternative if it has USB?

        • @halfnhalf71: If you have plugged in the Chromecast in the TV, it should have a usb port to power it up unless you plugged it in a normal power socket.

If it has a usb port, put all the videos, music or pics in the USB and let the TV read the USB and then you'll be able to view the contents of the USB unless the TV is so old to recognise files on the USB.

          Hopes this makes sense.

        • @angelkulit025: Ah ok. Yeah it's plugged into the mains, not power via USB. It's a pretty basic TV.

        • @angelkulit025: Some TVs, (like mine) will not read video through the USB, only JPEGs etc.
