[NSW] Service NSW Now Charges Merchant Fees (VISA/Mastercard: 0.44%; AmEx: 1.54%)

Just went online to renew my car's rego and found that Service NSW now charges merchant fees for payment by credit card (0.44% for VISA/Mastercard and 1.54% for AMEX).

I'm sure the OzBargain community will be divided about whether the value of the points earned will outweight the fee.

However, for those who don't think it's worth paying the fee, unless you can make it to a service centre during their opening hour (and can be bothered to wait to be served), make sure you don't leave it till the last minute because:
* BPAY the only fee-free payment option for phone or online transactions
* payment made via BPAY takes up to 3 business days
* the transaction is not effective until payment has been received

  • Also applies if you have their eTag and do auto top-up.

  • Credit card rewards value around 0.5% of the purchases so this fees are still smaller thus it is ok to use credit card.

    • It all depends which card card you've got, how you normally use the points, when you will be using the points (e.g. it might take you a long time to get to the new points if you already have a lot of points), how much you value the flexibility of holding cash vs reward points.

      So, each to their own.

  • I noticed that when I was paying my cars rego too. Luckily I didn't leave it to the last minute and paid by Bpay.

No way I was paying the extra! Even on a debit card. The buggers!

  • Glad I decided to do it today too. It's due on Friday (i.e. exactly 3 business days away).
