Smoking Barbecue (Weber)

Hi,
I want to buy a Weber Smokey Mountain bbq, probably 22". The prices in Australia are extortionate.

Any tips on deliveries from USA (Amazon doesn't ship them here) or do shops here that sell them ever have sales on these? Can't find references to any. Or any other tips?

Thanks

  • Unfortunately the shipping kills it for freight forwarding. It was on special at Costco recently for $479, that's pretty close to the USA price which is around $400 (Amazon price, no shipping, no sales tax).

If you can pick up a new one for $479, you're going well.

    • Thanks mate. I was in Costco on Sat, they didn't have the WSM unfortunately. Had the weber kettle and smokey joe

      • Keep an eye out. If I've learned anything about buying a Weber, it's biding your time for a sale. As the owner of three webers, two smokey joes and a WSM mini, you just gotta wait. Weber pricing in Australia is pretty fixed, about once a year somewhere likes BBQs Galore will have a deep discount on them, usually around November.

Heck, if you see them on special at Costco in the near future, I'll buy you a carton of beer just to buy one and ship it to me.

        • Haha cheers!
What are your thoughts on the 18" v 22"?

        • @MagicWhip:

Depends on who and what you're cooking. IMO if you're just a couple, or family with one kid, even the 14.5" is perfectly fine. I really want the 22" because I want to cook for parties and be able to do say, a brisket, ribs and buffalo wings all at once. That'd be a squeeze on the 14.5", less so on the 18".

At the moment, if I have a party, I run two webers, normally my OTG and my mini WSM, the mini more so for pulled pork, as the fuel load is too short for a brisket cook.

        • @richie83: I want to do brisket and ribs all at once . leaning towards a 22" unless i find a bargain on the 18"

        • @MagicWhip:

You'll want at least an 18" then, 22.5" would be better. A decent sized brisket will take up the whole of one level.

        • @richie83:
I ordered an 18" off ebay last night (seller has it new $100 cheaper than the RRP here, and eBay was giving 10% off too).

I'm happy with it after a lot of research. It is what this guy uses: slapyodaddybbq.com and also what is used in this book:https://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Smoking-Smokey-Mountain-Smokers

Hoping i made the right choice!

        • @MagicWhip:

Nice work mate, I'm sure you'll love it. Also checkout tvwbb.com and other bbq forums, there are some 'upgrades' you can do to it to make it a much better workhorse (I believe the seal on the door is shithouse).

I'd snatch one up at that price too, but right now I'm between houses and have nowhere to store it.
