Moving Interstate Brisbane - Sydney

My partner and I are most likely moving interstate very soon within a month, and we are looking at options of what to do with our stuff.

So far, with reasearch we are split between

  • Selling/chucking it all
  • Geting a backloader (truck shared space) and hoping everything gets there in one piece and within a good timeframe

Both are pretty crappy options, frankly - expensive and selling everything would be a serious pain as we have furniture (bedroom + kitchen)

I'm half considering getting fire insurance… (joke)

Have any of you done this before? I moved from Melbourne to Sydney a while back when I was single and had a lot less stuff and it was something like $500 and only 20% of my things went missing.

Any ideas/tips/want to buy a bed?

  • What is the actual problem you are trying to solve?

    • Getting from Brisbane to Sydney efficiently and cheaply

      • I've moved interstate several times. I pack a suitcase, and then send the rest by truck (e.g. Two Men and a Truck). I abandoned cost-effectiveness the first time I moved and opted for comfort instead. Moving is stressful enough as it is.

Personally I would pack a few suitcases of what you really need and then sell/donate everything else. I just think it would be easier to throw a garage sale and list items for sale now, than to have to worry about packing, transporting everything 1000 km and then unpacking. Selling as much as you can now will surely spread out the work of the move over a longer period rather than having a mass last minute rush to pack up and get out. If you want to keep your bed until the last nights, then put it on eBay with a $1 starting bid, time the auction to end a few days before you have to leave and specify in the description that it must be taken away before you leave.

When you move into a new place, you don't need much more than a bed for the first night, and it's easy enough to buy and progressively accumulate all the other things as you need them. Just think how easy it will be to move in with just a few suitcases, and then you can buy furniture and items to suit the new place (and score some great deals in the process). I think you will feel so much lighter and less burdened by belongings.

    Just my 2c.

    • But then how will the OP transport his/her car?

      • Op has a partner. Convoy.
