Logitech 2.1's have never let me down, but not sure if they're still bang for buck. Look for the THX certified ones for top doof

Which are currently pretty cheap (wow):

Although the Z906 has more doof, and 5.1, but it's just above your budget:

      Cheers mate you're a legend

      • As I said, there might be something better, but I find they're a good all round speaker.

Just be mindful of how they connect, whether it's rca, optical etc

  • Depending on the party size in the past I've just rented out a speaker for the night from somewhere like DJ Warehouse. I've been burnt once before after blowing a set of speakers.

If you have a mixer already a single speaker is only $40 a night and it also sounds a lot better than using home speakers. If you need a mixer this option with a mixer and 2x speakers is $89. There may be/are probably better deals out there than DJ Warehouse, and I can understand why you might want to own speakers rather than hire, but just an alternative.

  • How big is the party?
How big is the music area?

If its a small gathering in a living room, I have to say the JBL Flip 3 is a great device.
It's louder than other speakers in the same size-class.
It can fit inside a can/cup holder in a car.
Lasts a surprisingly long on a single charge
Its splash proof wateresistant (be careful other "waterproof" speakers are false advertised, they're only resistant too)
And you can pair two up together to get a decent portable system going.
These retail for $149 each… but I have seen them in retail stores for $79.

  • I have the Sony Bluetooth 100w RMS speaker, great for parties, simply plug in, connect via BT and away you go, mind you I got it for 120 during the DSE fire sale

Logitech do have nice THX speakers but in an outdoor setting they lack the necessary bass output in an open space and I have found them to give up once you drive them too hard for too long.

Hiring is a good option, but a pain the backside lugging speakers backwards and forwards, most places ask for a deposit, a painful 900 point ID check, Paperwork, the hassle of getting them to the Venue and Back, its seriously not worth the effort for a small party
