What Monitor Do You Use with Your Nvidia 1080 Video Card?

With all the recent deals on the Nvidia 1080 video cards, I have jumped on the bandwagon and am now looking to upgrade my 27" 120Hz 1080p monitor to something that takes advantage of the power of this card.

From what I can see of the current choice of monitors on the market, they generally require compromising on feature or price. Am interested to know what you think is the best out there at the moment for gaming that is 27"+, IPS, G Sync, 2k/4k and ~$1k in price. Also interested to hear about performance from anyone gaming at 4k with a 1080.

The Acer Predator XB271HU looks like a good option but concerned about reports of poor QA on build quality.

  • For the specs you listed (27"+, IPS, G Sync, 2k/4k and ~$1k in price) there really only is the Acer XB271HU or the Asus PG279Q. They both use the exact same IPS panel (AU Optronics) and as you already know, both have a number of QA problems and are still a bit of a lottery. If you really must buy one, then make sure you get it at a store where you can return easily (i.e. local shop).

There aren't any other IPS G-SYNC monitors out currently as only one IPS G-SYNC panel is currently available (AU Optronics). LG and the other main panel manufacturers haven't released their panels yet as high refresh IPS is still a new tech. It's probably a good idea to wait to the next generation of IPS G-SYNC panels to come out before you bite the bullet.

4K gaming on 1080 card is feasible but won't be super high FPS and you may need to reduce quality settings for certain games.

I found this site useful. Pretty good list of monitors there and some detailed explainers.

Off topic, are you interested in selling the old one? That would be an upgrade for me :P and my 1060 couldn't push anything much better :P

  • HDR
    4K
    21:9
    1440p
    144Hz
    Free/G-Sync

    Pick two.
(as you can tell, choices depend really on how you value different traits)

  • I've been using a Dell P2715Q for a while. Not really designed for gaming, and no G-Sync.

At 4k, many games are barely over the 60fps boundary. Others do alright at 80+.

If you want good 4k gaming, wait for the next generation. Or at least the Ti models.
