Extrajudicial Killing in The Phillipines

I know there are lots of cheap flights by cebu air to manila, and most people are aware of the new president and his extreme stance on drugs and law enforcement.

I want to bring attention to the following case of Australian man that is charged intentionally and wrongly to sell drugs and could have been executed falsely.

I strongly recommend for all of you fellow ozbargainers that will go there to seriously reconsider your travel plan or put extra careful measure not to be in the fight or doing something remotely condescending to local people. The current state of law there makes it very easy for revenge killing in the name of drugs enforcement and there is no way law system there able to save you out.

I have cancelled all my business plan out to manila and will use teleconference until situation is going back normal

Anyway, if you still need or want to go there, be safe, be vigilant and take care.

  • Have been there did not feel safe at all, would not go back, now with this loony's hit squads not recommended.

    • I've been there twice before and never felt unsafe, though most of my time was outside of the big cities.

The last time I was there I stayed at a well known surfing area, where the smell of weed in the air was quite commonplace, from both the tourists and the locals. I don't do any drugs but if people want to use them around me it doesn't bother me.

However would I go to that place again right now? Unfortunately no. Too easy to be falsely accused, or even flat out murdered, with the blame put on drugs.

There are many nice places in South East Asia and I'll be exploring those instead until normal programming resumes.

It's terrible what happened to him, but this happened before the new President was elected. This is a case of corrupt cops doing corrupt things which unfortunately, is rampant in a lot of places in Asia.

    • My understanding is that duterte is sworn in after this case but already pronounced winning the presidency back in may.

The police force and crackdown already begun before he assume office

I'm going to say parts of this story don't sound correct.

it's poorly worded and there are several basic grammatical errors.

and it's missing a lot of information.

at the moment it reads to me as a "Innocent White Westerner almost murdered by corrupt 3rd world Police" designed to propagate fear.

    shoddy & poor journalism

and OP change the wording "charged intentionally and wrongly to sell drugs and sent to death.." to "charged intentionally and wrongly to sell drugs and could have been executed falsely" it sounds like an innocent person(Australian) was executed

    • so true of many of the clickbait articles in that newsite

    • fixed as per your recommendation. Anyway, you do understand my point. Be extra careful not to rub people the wrong way if you still want to go to the Philippines in the near future.

Most of my business associates over there supports the president tremendously. However, one or two has expressed concerned personally that it is easy now to remove business competitor "if you know who and how". Very sad about this beautiful country.

      • I certainly get your point.
I'm not saying the Philippines is not in a difficult position.

but like any country you need to be sensible, don't make dumb mistakes and stay away from dodgy places.
