When is the best time to buy home contents (POLL)?

Just bought our first house… And we basically have minimal furniture. Have been living in units. We own a bed, washing machine and a bookcase. So will need to buy heaps of stuff.. It's daunting to fill out a house, but we'll do it over a few months.

It's nearly Christmas, and I think the bet deals for house stuff might be found in the boxing day or January sales? Or are there great deals coming up to Xmas?

In your ozbargain combined experiences, when would be the best time/month to set aside a week or two to buy the stuff we need?

Does it really make much of a difference?

Keep an eye on the eBay auctions for second hand items with low starting bids.

Firstly find out if there is a difference between needing to buy something and wanting to have something. Then work out how soon you need it, then start looking for bargains. You don't need lots of the things you will eventually buy.

My first house was filled with hand me downs, second hand and home made pallet furniture except for a new bed, fridge and microwave. Second hand is the best bargain.

my current couch was a freshly reupholstered 1960's couch free from gumtree. came with a 1940s upright floor lamp.

dining table was pulled out of a barn and I restored it (the table was built by my wifes great grandfather), Dining chairs are art deco 1960's swedish designed chairs bought from a garage sale for $5 each(set of 4).

Television cabinet is a vintage Japanese chest of draws that was a hard rubbish find on the streets of Tokyo.

my eldest daughters bed - I made from reclaimed hardwood timber (I'm quite proud of it as I had never done anything like it before and it came up well).

amazing what you can pick up for nothing/next to nothing

  • I've gotten some great electronic deals on boxing day i.e. at jb hi fi. main time they allow you to negotiate prices that you otherwise couldn't get. For my DSLR camera, fitbit, and more recentl go pros. I'm sure they would also extend that to TV's, white goods etc?

Although agreed, keep an eye out as gumtree and more importantly everyday bargains pop up once in awhile ( I got my nespresso machine at $69 or whatever it was for the inissia one from good guys due to this, yet now they're always mid $100s)
