I have read good reviews for Southern Cross on OzB.

They are cheap but terrible service.

I have used Travel Insurance Direct many times now and have found their level of cover really good. I also had to make a claim once after some unpleasantness in Peru and that process went smoothly. Google coupons for before you purchase as you can normally get at least 10% off.

I was recommended Webjet, but didn't use it.

They seemed alright on the face of it all

They are all fairly similar but vary depending on whether or not you are intending on hiring a car, going to the snow, going on a cruise and a few other small things. I'd just use a travel insurance comparison website to work out which one is cheapest, then read reviews and look over their PDS to see if specific clauses that may effect the traveler work for them.

I am currently traveling and I found budgetdirect to be the best for me, but last time I travelled I used under30travelinsurance, and the time before that I used fastcover, there is no single answer to this question without knowing the scenario of the traveler.

I used worldnomads for a similarly long trip because
    - they covered off-piste skiiing
    - they allowed you to extend the policy whilst you are overseas (I was not sure of my exact return date, so i bought a one year policy then extended)
    - they cover you if you are working (As i intended to do a working holiday as part of the trip)

I made one claim for a medical incident, they were very good.

Insurance changes often. I would read the fine print, and make sure it covers exactly what she needs.

+1 for Southern Cross and Travel Insurance Direct. Look around for 10% off coupons especially for TID. They are cheap and the coverage is great.

If I'm not mistaken travel insurance is free if you are HSBC Credit xard holder and paid those travel with the card.

iTrek - designed for travelers, not people on vacation. I have successfully made over 5 claims through them in various countries with $0 excess.

Thank you all for your help. What I have done is got her a Visa platinum card as additional holder on my Visa card. Paid for ticket with her new card and get free cover for the first six months. Now we have to buy extra six months but before she starts the trip. Total saving is approximately 450 dollars because travel insurance for a year is around 900 dollars.
Thank you all one more time.
