Mobile Porting and CBA Netbank

With all the recent posts about cheap prepaid sims with Optus, Telstra etc, I have followed suit like every other Oz Bargainer here and stock piled about a years worth of sim cards. Today I did a port from Optus to Boost mobile and as a result my CBA Netbank was "locked". Upon calling up the CBA support number, the consultant advised me that their fraud team monitors mobile porting and whenever a number is ported the customer's netbank account gets locked and you must go into a branch to unlock it.

So my question is how does every here manage this? Or does everyone here just go into their nearest CBA branch every month to unlock their netbank account?

That doesn't make sense to me, how would the bank know which network you are with? What about accessing the app via wifi. Seems like an odd move to me from CBA. It is almost easier to change banks. Am I missing something here?

    • I have no idea either but the person I spoke with on the phone said that the CBA fraud team's system monitor any porting activity. He said that this was due to other customers in the past getting their accounts drained as hackers were porting their mobile numbers so that they could obtain the SMS code.

    • Don't know about CBA but I've seen somewhere that it's possible to lookup the carrier for a mobile number so it is possible to monitor.

  • I think something happened to a friend of mine recently can shed some light on this move.

He was with virgin and his number was fraudulently ported to some other network by someone (did you know, you only need the name, address and dob to port a number from virgin? yeah I didn't either!) and this hacker has changed his passwords and got money out of his CBA account as well because all of those are tied to the phone number which is now controlled by the hacker. I think I've seen a couple of those incidents around and may explain why this precautionary measure makes sense on CBA's part.

  • Is this a new thing in CBA?
I have ported my number between Optus & Telstra 3 times. I had no issues.

  • Never heard of this before, but it sounds like a great measure from CBA given how ludicrously easy to steal possession of a mobile phone number in a targeted attack.

It is definitely possible to look up the carrier for a number. e.g. https://www.twilio.com/lookup is one service that offers this.

  • Exactly the same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago. I have been porting for some time now but only just got my account locked because of it….they must have been targeting porting fraud for the month.

I asked if there was any way i could get around this and was told no.

    • I went into the branch today to fix this up and the staff there said next time I want to port my number I should call up first letting them know and they won't block my account

      • thanks for the advice might have to do that in the future!
