Junkie Neighbour- Advice Please!

There are 5 units on my floor. One of the units on my floor is owned by a drug addict. He is a complete nuisance especially on weekends, gets his friends over, they get high, they go around talking loudly, swearing and sometimes end up fighting among themselves and then they walk around with bleeding faces.

He regularly knocks on people's door sometimes in the middle of the night to ask for money and few times even had him knock on neighbor door to ask for sex. But all the other neighbours are too scared to want to do anything about it.Though they have told me that police has come to his house numerous times before due to noise complaints from the folks in the adjoining building.

I am renting and have decided to move out of the house once my lease runs out next year but just want suggestions how to deal with him while I am still here. The reason I am writing this today is he and his junkie friend tried to block my wife's way today while I was away. I am just very concerned about the welfare of my family and not sure what to do.

Any practical suggestions to ensure the safety of family are welcome.

Many thanks for reading through this.

op's name is nobucks not asap

    • Exactly. It's Sydney, you can rent in a nice, quiet suburb nearby for only $1000 a week.

Just sell off some of your share portfolio, nobucks.

take over a 6 pack of beer and introduce yourself. have a few drinks together and a friendly chat. get a bit hopped up and make some bad decisions. assert your dominance in the bedroom and you'll earn his trust and respect.

Bikies will just thank you for introducing another customer for their drugs.

    • enough with the bikie jokes, seriously?

  • I have a similar neighbor and I contacted the real estate agent and told them about the issue, they told me to call the police and get a report of the incident and that would be enough to leave the unit without breaking the contract. I didn't call the police but one night i went down to them knocked the door and I was pissed off told them to stfu because i have had enough. Guess what, they are good now lol.

Report to police you see lots of suspicious people coming and going from the address and suspect that drugs are being sold from the premises

This. Crime stoppers 1800333000. If you call try to give the police something to go on like the vehicle Rego number of the druggie. Have you smelled burning cannabis? Have you seen money/packages change hand? Have you overheard any drug conversations? Is there a regular time/day for the activity etc… Trust me, if you just ring and give a generic report that your neighbors are druggies it will probably get filed due to insufficient information/evidence for further investigation.

    Terrible situation to be in.

Since brutal force won't do any good as it poses too much risk for family, I would see what my rights are legally, contact police and see if I can get out of the contract.

If all else fails, I'll pay the cost to get out of the contract. End of the day, it's probably worth it then have something unfortunate happen.

    • Thanks for your concern. But I guess luck is not on my side. I live on level 8 of the building and the lift has broken down and the strata has decided to replace it which is a 3 months project.

I work in public housing and while this person may well be in private rental i would suggest do not under any circumstances door knock or become involved by bringing the issues directly to his notice. You may become a target and if he gets complaints he will think you lodged it regardless of whether you did or not. You need to lodge anonymous complaints with the body corporate or his real estate etc. Let them handle it and keep on it with them. The Body corp can also lodge at the tenancy tribunal against the real estate etc. Or perhaps write to the ministers office. If its a public housing tenant the relevant tenancy section will have to respond to the ministerial question. But make sure you have lodged a complaint with the housing office 1st and provided them time to try and fix the issue. Ps these issues are extremely difficult to resolve.

Leave a small snappy bag of rat poison in the hallway.

  • Host a "zombie party", hire a professional makeup artist to ensure all your guests look like something out of the Walking Dead…wait until you're certain Mr Junkie and his buddies are well ripped and crank up the scary zombie tunes and start pawing at his door and groaning. It would be quite the trip…see how far you can make them run…and they wouldn't recognise you for retribution later ;)

That is awful. Hope you can move as soon as possible. Good Luck.

    Take up drug dealing
I mean the customer base is right there
With the lift broken you could use the missus as a lookout at ground level between tricks
Maybe fortify the building from aerial assault and you'd be set
See it's not a problem, it's a challenging business opportunity
    Your welcome

  • Last night I went through exactly what you have stated above. The guy is renting and he only just moved in. I own the apartment I am in so its a bit more difficult to simply move..

Called the cops but seems fairly ineffective… Bad times don't know what to do this sucks.

I understand mate. I moved out few months ago though the rent is much higher can't compare to the how stress free I feel now.
Try complaining to Strata so this guy gets evicted. If all else fails I'd suggest you rent and lease your Apartment. Not easy but worth it.

      Good luck mate!
