Renting a camera for a holiday?

I've heard some Americans mention they rent cameras just to take away on holidays. This sounds great as the rest of the time my phone is enough, but I would love to be able to rent a really nice camera for holidays away, one i couldn't justify buying to leave in the cupboard the rest of the year.

Does anyone know of any Aus-based or Aus-shipping company that does this? I googled around but only found places that rented for 3 months plus, but I'd really only need one month.

buy a second hand one off ebay and then sell it when you get back.

I think it's very silly idea to rent a camera, just go and buy one, they are not dear, what next ? You want to rent a luggage for your holiday too ? lol

? I'm looking for a SLR or mirrorless so a good lens and body will probably cost at least $1k, I think that's quite dear.

If I just wanted a point-and-shoot or a superzoom I would buy it, but those aren't much better than my phone camera.

Get a second hand Sony RX100, It's the best camera for travelling :)

        • I've heard that's really popular, but I think I'd like a larger sensor. At least APS-C, but ideally full-frame. I know it will be huge but I'm okay with that. I used to have a Konica 5D but it died :(

I don't get the idea. why put a brick in the traveller's pack? if it is to jmpress a gf, better off to hire one for holiday.

    • my mistake - I meant "better off to hire a girlfriend"

  • I suggest asking relatives, friends and co-workers if they mind loaning you their camera. You're bound to find somebody in similar situation who bought a camera for holiday pics, weddings, birthdays, baby pics but doesn't make use of it.

    • Good idea! I think most of my family have given up and just use their phones now, but maybe I can find a friend who hasn't yet.

  • I think rental is only for pretty high end gear. The target market is pro photographers doing a shoot where they need specific lenses etc.
See http://www.thefront.com.au/ or http://www.camerahire.com.au/ for examples.

I would buy second hand then sell on return. The possible loss on buying/reselling will be less than the hire fees.
Or better yet, what Mumbles suggests and borrow.
