Thoughts on Android 7.0 (Nougat) ?

It's been some time since the official release of Android Nougat 7.0, and I have been using it on my 6P for the last 3 weeks or so. How has everyone found it so far? To me there is practically no difference as compared to Marshmallow as expected from the beta, although there are some new additional handy features too.

Once you put Nova and restore your previous setting, all android versions are looks the same to me. No major features that I remember and use everyday.

    • True, although I do like the new Multi tasking gesture and split screens options without having to root the phone, which is something I would probably miss if I had to downgrade Android :) Yeah nothing too significant so far imo…

  • Touchwiz is what I have been using for about 6 years.

This means that I use a Samsung phone.

Samsung usually takes a while to release Android updates.

ANy news when S7 users will get it? :D

  • Has Boogle allowed games to be moved to the SD card yet? If not I'll be forced to stick with LP for anything I play games on that uses an SD card.

    • I could move apps/games to the micro SD card on my Moto G3 I had earlier this year, that was the new feature of Marshmallow where you can use the sd card as 'internal' storage. :) Although there is no sd card slot on most if not all nexus phones nowadays.

I have it on my 5X for around 3 weeks as well. I don't think I have used enough Android features to notice the difference to Marshmallow. Night and day comparing to my previous phone though (Nexus 4 on KitKat, now my daughter is using it).

    • Nice, Android KitKat was perhaps the second best update after Marshmallow imo.. Yeah there isn't a significant difference with 7.0 to me either :)

on my 6P it seems to chew my battery not sure what the problem is.
possible Wifi perm on.. still debugging..

    • Really? :) If anything I think the battery has slightly improved with the update from Marshmallow, mainly the stand by time though. I usually charge the phone at night before going to bed and the next morning it still has 99-100% of the battery left. Do you normally have the mobile data, location services, bluetooth etc. on whilst not using the phone? :)

      • I heard that some is better some worse. Seems to be linked to specific settings and how Android upgrades those to 7.
Might also be a combination which Apps you have. As I mentioned still experimenting.

There are small adjustments here and there… but adjustments doesn't always mean improvements.

Its running well on my Nexus 5X.
About the same in terms of camera performance, latency, lag, and battery drain.
I do notice the fingerprint reader is now noticeably slower, despite my fingerprints not changing.

And after I strip out Google Apps (Launcher, Keyboard, Chrome, Play Music etc etc) with alternatives from the Google Play Store…
…well there's very little in terms of changes.

However, I do like that I am on the new API/platform.
So it will get better/fleshed out in the future… and as a Nexus owner I get to benefit from that the soonest and longest.
At the end of the day, the Nexus will age rather gracefully compared most other handsets.

    • Yeah it's running smooth on the 6P too, and also I have noticed a slight lag in the finger print sensor as well? I personally don't prefer the use of launchers and like to to keep the phone minimalistic and fresh, but that's mainly because I still haven't learnt the best way to optimise launchers such as Nova :)
