  • MSY.

I've heard people buying retail keys from reddit, though some sell the OEM and volume licenses as retail. A Windows 7 license was about $25 this was quite some time ago though, and I've never bought them.

  • MSY was cheapest when I bought 3 weeks ago. Got Officeworks to price beat by 5%. Took a while as first Officeworks was being difficult and refused to match MSY. Second store said they don't normally beat MSY because their warranty policies are different, whatever that means. However, since it was software, warranty doesn't really apply.

Bought 1 of these, has been fine so far

    • I can second that, but Ive only used it for 2 months

  • there will probably be someone here who tells you about kmspico and how that "sort of hacks" the activation of win 10. but ignore that person.

  • Unless you are in a corporate environment where you are audited, you don't really need to activate windows 10…

All it does is give you extra additional personalisation.

You still get all the updates and everything else.

I run Win 10 unactivated in vmWare, and have no problems.

Walk into any store that sells computers and copy the key from one of them

  • windows 7 keys seem cheaper then just update to 10 …

  • Merged from Windows 10

Looking at getting a new PC build so considering upgrading from Windows 7 to 10. Can I still get Windows 10 free from somewhere? Will want to do a clean install.

I downloaded the iso file from windows (https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10) and just installed it, I think the key is on UEFI chip or something (not too sure) but it let me go straight from 8 to 10 and everything auto activated.

If you're on windows 7 that may probably not be the case and you may need to find your win 7 key somewhere? (I'd back this up either way)

But you can still upgrade to win 10 if you use assistive technology (or just switch it on?) See deets: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgra…

You might be able to do a wipe after the upgrade (or maybe another way) but either way should be doable for free.

      • I'm getting a new computer, so the iso may not be able to auto-detect the key. Unfortunately, I don't think I have the win 7 key anymore. Any idea if I can back this out? I also have Windows 10 on my laptop, any idea if this is somehow transferable to a new desktop computer?

        • Oh right, umm I'm unsure. I've looked online and I've seen programs that can pull your key from your computer so might be worth a shot? Though I've never pulled one from a comp, and used it on another comp so I don't know how easy you can move it across.

You're right that you probably won't have the UEFI autodetect part, umm the problem is whether you'll need a win 7 iso, to install win 7 to the new comp, which should ask for the win 7 key (which you can hopefully pull from your laptop with software floating around). Of which you can then use the assistive technology upgrade to win 10?

Or else possibly use the win 7 key when it asks you for a key with the win 10 upgrade?

I have no idea if either of this is possible or correct though. Apologies I can't be much help.

          Someone else might know more.

        • Just pulled my Windows product key from my laptop using one of those programs. Can I use this key together with the Windows 10 media tool to do a fresh install on my new desktop computer? Or is the laptop product key single use only?

These are some good places to go for CD keys.

      Full Retail Key: http://ozsoftwarestore.com/shop/operating-systems/microsoft-…

      OEM: http://www.play-asia.com/microsoft-windows-10-pro-3264-bit-o…

I have purchased from both before and both will send the key within an hour or so.

good thing to fall back on if you can't claim the free key.

    • Free upgrade from 7 to 10 https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/accessibility/windows10upgra…

Find your old key: https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ (Won't find Volume Keys)

  • Thanks to all for helping out. In the end I booted windows 10 off my old HDD and activated the code from my old laptop that broke
