Think you need to figure out what protein is first and how it helps you. theres alot of things out there to help you lose weight..changing your diet will help ALOT. cut the sugar and watch the weight drop.

I am on a healthy eating plan

After a work out isn't there something to drink that will manage my hunger or replace a meal

Nothing is nicer then a nice icey cold shake
But I don't want to gain muscle from it

If you are already on a healthy eating plan then the only reason to use protein is appetite suppression (protein rapidly causes your stomach to feel full).

Based on what I do: if I was you I would go to bulk nutrients and buy their

-WPC flavoured protein ($27/KG, decreases per KG as you buy in bulk). I hate every flavour other than chocolate but YMMV.

-Vital Pre-mix which is basically a 100% Australian RDI multivitamin in chelated form (much cheaper to buy in bulk but $25 or something cheapest). More or less this is just a fancy multi-vitamin that is absorbed way faster than tablet or pills.

        -Maltodextrin (medium chain carbohydrate)

-Buy digital scales if you don't have any, Bulk Nutrient sell them for $20 or something, you need something to weight to 0.1g accuracy.

How you mix these is up to you: I would try 3 scoops of protein, 2 grams of Vital-Premix (7 grams is roughly the Australian RDI daily amount) and maybe 1 scoop of Maltodextrin. You need to adjust it to your desires: if you feel hungry after a workout add more protein, if you want more energy add more Maltodextrin but be careful with adding carbs obviously.

Mix it into 600 mL of water (that's a standard protein shaker size) or whatever.

I drink half while I workout and half in the shower.

  • A protein shake will do very little for your hunger. You want to be eating whole grains/sweet potato/complex carbs that take a longer time to digest and are healthier than protein shakes which are only intended to supply you with protein.

If you are on a healthy eating plan then it should have a good provision for a meal after you workout.

Whole, unprocessed foods are miles ahead of anything formulated to 'replace a meal'.

Your whole post follows the same idiocy that the food industry has lobbied the Australian government into following although you've decided to follow the everything natural is better ideology as well which isn't 100% misguided but believing it's infallible which you seem to certainly is.

Australian's basic problem is food is everywhere and we cannot control ourselves therefore we overeat. Carbohydrates do not cause appetite suppression for a long time after consuming them so people eat a lot of them. Your advice is carry out behavior that causes weight gain from overeating.

Eating protein causes very fast appetite suppression. I challenge you to make a protein shake, drink it and then try gorging on potatoes. The other way around works just fine.

OP wants to lose weight, protein shakes are an excellent way to do this because they cause appetite suppression. Unlike the starchy foods you recommend.

      • I beg to differ in one way. I have cut a significant amount of weight and and attribute that to eating my protein. Eat some low fat cottage cheese or no fat Greek yoghurt. Yoghurt obviously has its carbs, but still should be far more satiating than just consuming a protein shake.

  • If youre looking for a simple meal replacement with (some) protein, blend (lite) milk, banana and peanut butter. could also add oats if its not making you feel full for long enough. But from a weightloss POV any of the 'stripping' proteins on the market only work by speeding up your metabolism with things like green tea, caffeine and will most certainly not keep you from feeling hungry.

Probably the best solution is to drink lots of water, keep eating a healthy diet and maintain portion control.
Although just so youre aware, muscle is what burns fat. ergo more muscle= easier fat-loss.

I highly recommend Dymatize ISO 100. I have been using it for 5 years now of which 1 year I went through a 20kg loss journey. Below why:

    • No lactose - The only whey protein which is 100% lacctose free (I am lactose sensitive)
    • No carbs / nor fat
    • No bloating its clean and lean
    • Works well with smoothies
    • Amazing taste just with water - fat loss its best to mix with water (I use the gourmet vanilla)
    • Its a tested protein where lab results reflects the nutritional values

A tip on gym for weight loss - with resistance training at some point you won't notice any loss in weight. This is because you are building muscle and losing fat at the same time. Muscles are heavier than fat. So don't give up make sure you to measure your waist line or body fat percentage as they don't lie.

    Good luck.

    • Weights are good.
      Cardio is good.
But never forget…. the leg day.

    • I used ISO 100 for 10 years. Once I found BN protein at half the price I never went back to Dymatize.

My last purchase for ISO 100 was $100 for 2.2kg from last ebay sale. Isn't BN WPI $99 for 2kg ?

        • $69 for 2 kilos. $76 delivered overnight.

Can you please post a link to the eBay seller where you are buying ISO 100 at $100 for 2.2 kilos with postage?

Why did you need a click bait title when you could've included your entire first sentence in the title?

  • My girlfriend and I (she has lost 35kgs in the last few months) have used the Combat cookies and cream protein powder which we got from costco which was pretty reasonably priced. We have just also bought the Titan choc mint one which is available at chemist warehouse (and now rolling out to more places). We find both of these are relatively healthy (low carbs and sugars for protein powders) and also really good flavours.

After a workout we both have a shake, I usually have one scoop in 250ml water (im really only trying to maintain weight or lose a couple of kgs - currently 75kgs and not muscly).. She will have probably 3/4 a scoop in 200ml or so of water

  • See a dietician, rather than rely on bro science.

If you are on a healthy eating plan it should have enough protein already.
