Xbox 360 Arcade Vs. Elite

Ok so i bought an Arcade but i’m thinking of upgrading to an elite (sell the arcade off).

  • What is jtagable, and what are the advantages? What’s the average price? Will i still be allowed on xbox live?
  • Will i need to buy extra storage for the arcade?
  • are the old xbox games compatable - on the box it says no, but online it just says you need to download the patch.
  • Arcade is not HD, correct?

I had an xbox (orignal) before and i enjoyed it, but im not a full-on gamer. It still had 50,000+ blocks of memory left when i was finished with it (aka it died). I would be looking to download content eg. songs for lips and save my progress in games. Other than that not too sure. Enjoying gaming, but not being a pro…what do people think?

Suggestions/opinions?

Thanks in advance :)

    • Jtag

Jtag is a hack that is done on consoles built before June 09 and it must have a dashboard version of 7371 or older (lower number such as 7363 etc)

The hack allows full on control of the console, homebrew, modifications and HDD loading of games without disc (I'm not condoning piracy but you can back up your games easily with tools such as XeXmenu) In terms of piracy you can also download Arcade games and DLC straight from the net and use them for free on your Jtag.

The hack is not easy for newb modders, its not easy for most modders to be honest but experienced modders can be found quite easily, most will do the hack for around $60 - $80 depending on the model of your console (big block Jasper can take a bit longer)

You can take a Jtag online but it'll get banned quickly.

    • Standard

Arcade console doesn't come with HD cables but you simply can buy a hdmi cable and you're all set for 1080p. (2005/2006 models are not hdmi compatible, you'll need a component cable or VGA cable to get 1080i out of them)

Extra storage isn't a problem as you can now use USB sticks as storage for 360, there is a 16GB limit per stick.

Xbox original games will not work without official HDD, the HDD contains data that pretty much emulates an Xbox 1 (unless you go Jtag, you can then use any USB HDD to store the data)

If you want to play online you will also need an Xbox 360 HDD, it contains the relevant data that is needed to get online.

    • My Opinion

Get an arcade if you don't plan on going online at all, also if you like the sound of the Jtag.

Get an elite from JBhifi if you want to go online, they are a good console.

I have both so it's all good.

  • Thanks for the great response. hmmm i don't want it to be blocked, and i like the idea of going online, although it's not a must (can just upload content from burnt CD/DVDs i think).

"Extra storage isn’t a problem as you can now use USB sticks as storage for 360, there is a 16GB limit per stick." So i can use ANY usb memory?? that would be AWESOME!

    hmm still not sure…

  • yeah any USB stick or HDD but it has a limit of 16GB, say for instance you use a 320GB HDD, it'll use 16GB the rest it just won't be able to use

you can also use USB to move content over to a Jtag console if you go that route, no need for CD's

  • Thanks for all the help!…

I've read that Jaspers are better (less RROD). If i buy a new elite, will it be anywhere near as good in this area (heating, noise, etc) or will it be worse than the Jasper (or is it likely to be a jasper)?

    Thanks again :)

  • A new Elite will be a Jasper yes

There's like a 10% chance of it being Jtag'able though, you want older Batman Lego pack stock for a higher chance

  • hey …BeAkEr… thanks for your response, couple of questions as i am a novice in this area and just started looking into it…

If u buy an xbox arcade and it is built post june09 can u still get it modded?

So if an external hard drive will give me 16gb of extra space, how many games can that hold?

Any suggestions on where to look to find an experienced modder?

    any advice much appreciated

    • Anything after that date can only have the DVD drive flashed. no Jtagging

  • I got an Arcade for $200 and immediately regretted it because of the noise and lack of hard drive. I sold it and bought an Elite and very happy with my decision. Thought the old white was a nicer colour though.
