Need Some Advice on 4G Static IP's and Port Forwarding

Hello Ozbargainers,
I turn to you once again for some tech help, usually I can nut this stuff out but this is definitely not my field of expertise.

I have recently bought a TP-Link 4G router (mr200) and I am trying to sort out some port forwarding for remote viewing of my HikVision (ozbargain advice to get these bad boys).
So I spoke to our 4G provider (optus) who provided me with the advice that if I want to forward ports (Port 80 in particularly) I would need a static IP. I have now bought one of these from Optus at a cost of $5 dollar per month and it doesnt work with the existing port forwarding settings on the router (that work perfectly on ADSL).
What would I now need to do to be able to get these ports open?

They provided me with a static IP address over the phone but when I go to whatsmyip.com it comes up with something else.

We have invested quite a bit on this system on the basis that we can remote view, I am gonna get my butt kicked if it turns out we cannot.

All advice appreciated :):)

  • Okay so, you don't need a static ip to forward a port.
Customer service might be useless and just fobbed you off.
Check your ip here: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=ip disconnect then reconnect and see if it's the same.

If it changed don't fret there is a away around this.

Use the free Dynamic DNS at https://freedns.afraid.org/

    • I read some info on the net that was stating a static IP was needed when using 4G to port forward…
Hmmm could have had optus pull the wool over my eyes here. Either way I can cancel it if its not required.

Hikvision has a DDNS service, and I have followed all their steps, apparently this is just a harder process over 4G?

      • I can't imagine so. Unless Optus is taking technical measures to prevent customers from inbound connections.
Run https://www.grc.com/shieldsup with port 80 after you forward it to check.

  • I'm not sure about Optus, but I know on Telstra 3G/4G the IP addresses are NAT'ed on their network. The IP you see on www.whatismyip.com or whatever will be the NAT address which you then share with multiple others.

This may also be the case with Optus so just something to keep in mind when troubleshooting. In Telsta's case the only way to get a "real" public IP was to go onto a Business plan and use their telstra.corp APN.

    • I was worried that was the case.
I wonder if you can just use telstra.corp without being on a business plan.

      • Nope, Telstra have to add a code onto the service in order for you to access the APN so you need to be on a Telstra Business plan.

In fact I believe personal and business accounts are in different systems from memory.

  • Do a web search for ddns hikvision and watch YouTube videos and read results pages. I did and it seems to give you all the info you need. You DO NOT need a static IP to Port forward, if someone tells you otherwise, end conversation with them as they cannot help you.

  • If your connection is NAT'd, then try using a good VPN.
