Dashcam Suggestions

So I've been looking at a lot of places for dashcam suggestions, I know everyone on here is obsessed with the G1W-CB for it's value, and it is certainly cheap, but was also looking at taking advantage of the ebay voucher offer.

Anyone else have any other alternative recommendations?

  • The G1W-CB is only $46.78 delivered?
    It's a no brainer. Dashcamtalk.

    • Sorry, I forgot to mention in my post, I was looking at getting 3 -4 of them, 2 cars at home, and 2 for my gf's parents cars, so maybe around 4 in total.

      • Well, 4x G1W-CBs then. Make sure you get 4x 32GB Micro SD cards when the next OzB memory card deal pops up.

        • To save a bit more money you could probably get away with 16gb or even 8gb cards (I've got 8gb.) It's roughly 1gb per 10 min if i calculated correctly when I bought the thing and unless you need recordings of entire trips then 80 minutes should be plenty for insurance purposes.

  • Had G1W for about a year. No major issues, footage is "clear enough" for general stuff. Can't read plates as well as some of the newer good-value models A119 http://www.gearbest.com/car-dvr/pp_392247.html?wid=21&lkid=1…

Only drama is that it forgets date (experienced by some not others). Otherwise ok for the money.

I would just use my phone mounted as a GPS and dashcam.

    • Depending on the memory on your mobile you might wear it out fast with no way to replace it.
      I would recommend against this.

      • Wearing out your memory is not a concern.

The problem is that his phone will use a lot of juice on the trip.
So when he arrives at his destination, he would've depleted half of it… and run out of juice before the end of the day.
And if he charges it, well then you also have the concern of overheating.

The excess heat will degrade the battery quickly.
And with most phones having internal batteries, it would mean he would have to upgrade sooner.

I used to do this with the OG NOTE.
        I would advise against it.
It's much better to just have a dedicated dashcam.

  • Love my A119, often you can find it for about A$100 on special.
    Has better quality than G1W.
If you get the A119 also get the GPS module for a few $$ extra.
I read somewhere it should get around the loss of date, getting date/time form GPS.
But haven't been able to verify that bit yet.
Also get a high endurance 32GB memory card, with those HD cams they fill card in hours. On a long trip you quickly start overwriting.
My wife and myself have 2 cams each (front/rear).
Had on incident where a rear cam would have made insurance claim easier.
Another hit in car park I almost couldn't proof as my previous cheap cam didnt work when I pulled into the lot, cut out.
Dash cams really safe money, and maybe one day make it to Dash Cam Australia LOL

  • I use the Street Guardian dashcam that had great reviews on: http://dashcamownersaus.com.au/

It's an excellent camera, and you can also get a polarising filter for it if you find that you get a lot of reflections from your dash.

  • I don't have a dashcam yet but am in the market, it's all good having a front facing cam but surely a 2-ch makes more sense? What if I'm sitting at the lights and someone rear ends me and reverses and drives off?

I would have no proof for my insurance company so for me it makes sense to get a 2-ch camera, however the costs are obviously much more than a 1-ch.

    • Just buy two G1W-CB's for $93.56 as per my link above.

  • A119 with GPS. Can read number plate. Don't bother with other that can't read number plate.

  • Is installation of A119 straight forward ? Is it wireless and needs a USB connection ?
What can GPS be used to track ur route ?
