Major Stuttering When Seeking Movie on NAS

Hey IT Geeks, need help

I have a Gigabyte Router and a NetGear NAS (GB port) with 2x 4TB (5400RPM) drives.
My transfer speed of files to the NAS from my PC is around 44MB/s, so speed is good.

Streaming a movie on my TV from the NAS is perfect

The problem is when I browse for a movie on my NAS via my Computer and just skip to any given point, it freezes, then it catches up after like 40secs.
It's like anything to do with movie "seeking" it has major problems.

What could this be?

Have you tried turning it off and then on again?

  • Try it with a cable?

  • what program are you using to browse movies on your NAS from your computer?

  • Try it with a cable?

The NAS is connected to my Gigabit router via a Cat6 cable

what program are you using to browse movies on your NAS from your computer?

I've mapped a share drive on my PC which connects to my NAS, for e.g: X:\192.168.0.5\Movies, I just use Windows Media Player

    • Try a different program like VLC player or Media Player Classic and see if there is any improvement.

      • ok will do.

    • is your computer connected to your Gigabit router with a cable?

      • Yes, both the NAS and my PC are connected to the Gigabit Router via CAT6 cable.

Like I said, I can transfer a file to the NAS from my PC at 45MB/s, yet PLAYING a movie on the NAS and skipping like half-way seems to have an issue.

  • It's probably the Hdrive having to access lots and lots of little files all over the disk.
