Buy Now or Wait - Nikon Camera

Been wanting to get a Nikon D610 for a year and half now .. but after using a friends D7000 I realised that I don't really need to go full frame.
So i've decided to upgrade my D3100 which i out grew after a month lol.
Thinking of getting a D7200, Currently the cheapest I can find is $948 shipped for the body.

Would it be better to wait to see if there is some form of cash back that nikon does around christmas? or just bite the bullet.

Thanks!

  • I would suggest you to grab / keep decent lens - the lens will last.

Given that you've had a APSC camera, there is no obvious reason unless you would like to do the 2nd angle video, etc..

PS: I am a Cannon guy with 70D… I spent my money on decent lens, like 70-200 2.8L IS from TGG eBay deal last year…

Would recommend to wait till Christmas, found a great deal last year for the D7200's from Ted's Cameras. Paid roughly $1650 and got two lens kits, a tripod, 64 GB sd card and a $50 store voucher, then additional cashback from Nikon which brought the price down to about $1500 so great bargain at the time. Yep Christmas :)

What was the tipping point for you growing out of the D3100?

The D3100 i got when i new nothing about photography, I shot on manual straight away and after I grew, i found I needed a bigger iso range (even at the low end) and a lot better low light focusing etc.

  • I am wanting to get a camera too, think I will wait for Christmas. Don't really like how Canon doesn't have 4k unless you spend a fortune. I like the Olympus OMD but a shame they are only 16mp. Thinking I will go for Sony A6300 if there is a good deal, also going to consider the Nikon range.

    • Canon's screwing things up a bit I think, I've been waiting for their 6D Mk ii for ages as well and it's nowhere to be seen duh!

  • I'd wait until Nikon can make up their minds what they are doing with their AF-P range of lenses.
The new 70-300 vr has some very favourable reviews but as yet the D7200 doesn't have full functionality.
The D7200 would require a firmware upgrade and menu update to be able to turn off VR from inside the body as the new lenses don't have the VR buttons anymore.
At the moment the only cameras offering full functionality to this exciting new lens is the d3300, d3400, d5300 and d5500.
Not even the latest D500 has full functionality which is a new all time low IMHO.
Review on the bythom website explaining in detail why this is so important given that the new "longreach" dx lens is superior to those 70 - 300vr lenses that came before it.

  • I have a D610 and D7000 for my shoots and I love them both.

There is no need to go for full frame, you can get very nice photos with the D7000-7200 as long as you have a nice lens to go with it.

I get Nikon Australia discount via work, Last time I paid 827 aud for body only of D7200(about a year ago). Best bet is to wait for the deals under 900 for body only.

Number one rule of SLR cameras is never invest too much in a body, it's the lens that will get you the 'better' shots.

You'd rather go second hand body off gumtree accompanied with a solid lens or two than buying a new body and having mediocre lenses.

    My 2 cents anyways.

  • Did you buy a camera yet?

I have owned a D7000, D700, & D610. I sold my D7000 when I got my D610 (got it basically for $950 brand new at JBhifi after all discounts included!!).

Each camera has been really good. I sometimes partially regret selling my D7000 as I had to buy larger, more expensive full frame lenses, and the overall benefits are perhaps not that huge (they are noticeable, but it depends how important they are to you). I now also have a micro four third system, so I am very much sorted when I want to go smaller.

If you decide to stick with APSC, there are some great wide angle lenses that are cheaper and lighter than full frame (Tokina 11-16 2.8 for example), so you're not necessarily missing out in that department. When it comes to long telephoto lenses it's mainly only a benefit having APSC.

A D7200 would be very good, and for sure the D610 is excellent, but if you want cheaper you could consider a 2nd hand D7000, or a D7100. If you're not too fussed about a bigger buffer (taking lots of photos in a row), I would try to find the D7100 for cheap, there's not much else better about the D7200.

I agree with one of the above comments - lenses are generally more important (provided you have a decent enough camera, which all the ones mentioned definitely are).

Happy to answer any questions about the cameras or lenses :)

    • Have not purchased yet, Finances went out the window so now i'm forced to wait anyway.

Majority of what I shoot (99%) is portraits so i shoot on a 50mm most days.(indoor and out door)
a 25-70 would be nice though!

Not too keen on going second hand.. I picked up a 50mm second hand and It sends my OCD nuts :)
I'm going to for a 7xxx series im sure.. the 610 I wanted for so long, but I think it's just over kill now

      • Fair enough RE 2nd hand. I've purchased a few lenses 2nd hand with no problems, but it's always got an element of risk. You can sometimes get a good price though.

Maybe you can pick up a cheap D7100? A quick search showed them from around $750 right now.

A 50mm (particularly on APSC) is good for portraits. If you want to take the next step in portrait lenses I would recommend the Nikon 85 1.8g, but it will be fairly tight on an APSC body though, so might not suit you.

I wouldn't recommend a 24-70 on APSC for many reason (not a good all round focal range, heavy, expensive etc). There are several decent general zooms made for APSC starting from around 16-18mm, that are cheap, lighter and start much wider. They would be the way to go and would pair well with a 50mm.
