Can I Do Better than This Modem for ADSL2+/NBN for the money?

My friend's ADSL modem router is dying. I am trying to buy them a new modem/router with some degree of future proofing included. They don't have NBN yet (soon?).

Do you think I can do better than a TP-LINK Archer VR600 AC1600 for the money?

All I want is (minimum specs):

  1. ADSL2+/VDSL(NBN) compatibility
  2. AC wireless (any speed, 2.4 and 5GHz)
  3. No high-end requirements needed, like gaming, 4k streaming, VOIP etc
  4. Budget, less than $180

Any comments welcomed.

Buy a decent router, and get the "free" FttN modem when the friend's neighborhood goes live.
Make sure the ISP's FttN modem is bridgeable.

I have an old Netcomm NB6 ADSL2 modem you can bridge to the router in the meantime. PM me

    • Archer D7 doesn't do VDSL tho!

      • As above.. forget VDSL.
Why pay for something now that you can get for "free" in the future?
Every dollar spent by the manufacturer on adding VDSL (or for that matter ADSL) capability is a dollar cut from router performance.
