Changing careers/jobs

Desperately need help. Im in banking and finance sector and have been so for the past 4 years. (Mid 20s) Im seriously considering changing jobs/careers as their has been a major change in the way things are done. I just got a payrise but am still on a relatively low salary. I need some guidance have considered and attempted apprenticeships/trade work but its not for me and its not an option. Im fairly good at sales but dont think I will be reliable day in day out. I need a balance between sales and off the phones. Thanks for the responses

  • What's the major change?

    • Major increase in on phone activity.

  • get a job not in a call centre

  • Is there room to move to a different job within the bank or to a different bank that does things differently? A move like that would probably be the easiest transition, next easiest would be moving out of banking but keeping it finance related.

    • I dont work for a bank & no I cant move to another position internally.

    TBH you haven't been very specific. So can't expect a very specific answer?!

    • I work in collections & ive been doing it for past 4 years

    What sort of guidance are you looking for?

    If you are mid twenties and on a low salary just find another entry level role and work your way up. Doesn't seem like a big decision to me.

    • Yeah but all I know is collections, so im finding it difficult but I want to further my career but not sure if I should work part time get a degree or start at the bottom in a insurance company for example

        Do you not have a degree in finance? Considring you are mid 20's I thought you had a diploma or some uni quals already.

        you could do payroll

        or credit analyst

        • Thank-you.
          No I dont have a degree :/
          Do you have a degree is it worth the investment? Just writing that I feel silly lol Obviously its worth the time and resources but I need money and am looking to buy a house and start a family so yes. Im facing some adversity in my life at the moment

          To advance into bigger companies yes they do need a degree. Otherwise you will need to know some people in high places and get them to refer you.

          Smaller firms don't care but you will find that you will climb a lot faster with a qualification.

          It might be a good idea to get Rg146 certified so ask your employer if they are willing to pay for you. Otherwise it will cost you about 1.5 grand from Monash, which you can do online at your own speed (but you must complete it within 2 years). Kaplan has better brand name but they offer pretty much the same stuff.

          rg146 let's you provide financial and investment advice, which is also necessary for some types of finance jobs. Ask your boss.

          At your age you might want to think about challenging yourself abit and don't be afraid to take a little risk, and upgrade your skills.

          You can choose to start again from the bottom of the ladder in another industry but it will take you a while to climb, that is an option too if you are sick of finance.

          Thank-you for your advice - i really appreciate it.

          One more thing, Do you think employers view skills as transferable between the finance industries ? For Example; I have four years experience in collection roles (more or less call centers) If I want to change to the insurance industry for example understandably I will start at the bottom which is no loss because i'm a frontline employee right now with no career advancement opportunities. Will another employer take me on with no experience in the field ?

          @PAOK11:

          call center jobs fall into the 'customer service' category, and there are plenty of opportunities for you to move laterally between different types of industries. Insurance companies, telecomms, banks, companies in fmcg (fast moving consumer goods), all require staff to answer phone calls.

          Also if you have sales skills you could also try B2B sales as well, just be prepared to do some travelling. This is the kinda job you roll your sleeves up for.

          In fact next week I will be taking a 2nd interview for b2b sales, I don't even have call center experience, I just worked about 2 years in retail.

          some other options you can also explore are
          * customer relationship management
          * account management
          * sales manager
          all of which are upper-tier management positions which you can achieve with the right amount of experience and on the job training. Work hard, work smart and most important be competitive in the industry and you will get there.
