Should I Take a Pizza Delivery Driver or Coles Job?

Last time I had to choose between two jobs I picked the wrong one so I want to consult Ozbargain this time.

The pizza job pays $17.50 with an extra $2.50 per delivery which is great since I was getting $12 cash in hand in my last job. Also the pizza place opens at 5 PM so that's pretty suitable for me as a uni student. The manager expects at least 3 or 4 shifts a week however which should be fine since its all at night. It sounds really appealing to be honest.

For Coles its part time and in the grocery department. I haven't been to the interview for that one yet. And not so sure what the pay is like for part time. Anyway what's the environment like for these jobs? I've heard being a delivery driver can be chill except when it gets busy. Don't know about Coles.

Thanks for the help.

I don't think either job will make much of a difference in your life. Just be careful if you're a pizza guy that you don't get speeding fines from meeting quotas (also bring protection in case)

I would just pick what you feel would interest you more. If the grocery job is nightfill I think that pays around $21 or $23 an hour and is usually a few hours a night.

Have a look on page 19. This is pretty old but the agreements haven't changed. Assume an increase of 3% of hourly wage per year. I think p/t and f/t rates are around ~$22/hr, but they take into consideration your age. i.e 18-19 y.o get 67.5% and 19-20 y.o get 80% of $22/hr.

Coles is chill, most of the time you're stacking stuff, unless someone comes and asks you something.

    • Yeah I'm 19 so I would be getting something $16-17

The way I see it is, do I want free pizza or 5% Coles ( assuming they are the employee perks)

Delivery driver can be a bit of a dodgy job, I know someone who had a gun pulled on him and never went back to it. Probably take the Coles job, stacking shelves is a nice cruisy job. I applied a while ago and didn't get it, they like the younger staff I think.

    • Ok I don't like the idea of a gun being pulled on me

At the Pizza Delivery job are you providing the vehicle or is it provided by the shop? That makes a big difference in regards to how much money you are actually making.

Even if you get an additional $2.50 per delivery, how much will it cost you to maintain your car? Fuel, Wear & Tear?

What will the pizza place have you doing when you are not on deliveries? I know of some places that expect you to do all of the cleaning duties when you are not on the road (dishes, floors, etc) and if you are quiet of the early evening they may even put you out the front to make you hold up signs (Dominos for example). Make sure you are aware of your full duties, find out if they are just driving or if their are other things included that may make it less "chill"

    • Yeah I was told I would be expected to keep the fridge full, wipe tables and do other miscellaneous stuff while waiting for a job. And the vehicle is mine as well

      • +4

That is the other thing you have to account for wear and tear on your vehicle. Pizza delivery driver is not a great job imo unless they provide vehicle.

        • Tax office figures 66c per kilometre for car operating expenses, to give you an idea what the all-in costs of supplying the vehicle might look like (assuming you already own it, so just incremental fuel and maintenance).

Coles. You will learn more, and there would be more opportunity.

  • Ok it's overwhelmingly Coles, but what are hours like and how many days do they expect you? I don't want to work more then 3 or 4 times a week.

You haven't had the interview yet, just ask, you lose nothing for asking, in fact it makes you seen more engaged and interested in the job

    • They'll ask about your availability. The more available you are, the more shifts you'll get. But you can tell them that you want to do ~3-4 shifts a week and they'll slot you in whenever.

Using your own car kills it for me, shame you couldn't do night duty at Coles then you get to be chill as well.

Personally at Coles it sounds like a whole, air conditioned area, stocking doesn't look too hard, music on the speakers depending where you shop, range of people you can say hay too, and you're already at a supermarket (plus hopefully discount on groceries).

Delivery sounds a bit more adhoc and by yourself, you don't go with anyone during deliveries. You use your own car, which takes a major chunk out of the money you make. Dealing with money and people is also annoying, having to give change, with deliveries waiting.

It also depends where you live though, if you're in a more chill area, then delivery wouldn't be too bad, especially if you enjoy driving.

"Last time I had to choose between two jobs I picked the wrong one"

In my opinion though, it doesn't matter which job you choose, it will probably feel like the wrong one. I know that sounds sucky, but as they say, the grass is always greener.

Also probably not helpful but I find the manager is a bigger choice for the job, for example if the pizza one is nice, I'd lean a bit more to that, but if they're both equally nice I'd probably go Coles.

    • Yeah the managers was part of the reason I left my last job. The manager for the pizza place seems genuinely nice and he talked in a real friendly manner as opposed to a strictly professional way, the few times I see the manager at Coles he seems sorta grumpy and he talks in a really passive aggressive way. Thanks for bringing that up cause the managers really effected the enjoyment of my previous job.

        effected

Affected. I take it you're not studying English at Uni.

      music on the speakers

God knows I go to Coles just to hear Coles Radio.

      • +4

Did you know that if you have a digital radio, you can actually get Coles Radio in the comfort of your own home/car?

        • +3

I didn't know, thanks for telling us :). Now I can save my money not having to drive to my local comes to listen to my radio station ;)

Coles is likely to allow you to specify which days you can work (but won't like it if you are oo restrictive), so it isn't impossible you could take both jobs. Two nights delivering and two nights at Coles.

    • There is a lot more risk delivering pizzas. And not only due to unpleasant clients.
Driving around all night looking for street numbers in the dark is risky. Do that on Fridays and Saturday nights with drunks around and it is even more risky.
And who covers your car's damage if you have an accident. And the insurance may dispute the claim if they get to know that you were using the car for business.

coles -looks a bit more solid on your resume.

and depending on what you do at uni then it may provide room for advancement

  • The answer is, the first one you get.

I would 'choose' coles, but I would accept the pizza job if they offer it to you first. You can always quit and go to Coles. You can't always go back to the pizza place if you put all of your eggs in the one basket with Coles.

Go Coles mate, this is a no brainer. I've been a driver before at dominos and you don't want to do it.

  • +1 coles - more perks, more room for career progression. You may start grocery then move around and slowly work your way up

The wear and tear driving around from pizza delivery not worth it. I use 40c/km as a guide on the wear and tear of your car.

  • Coles 150%
Pizza delivery is a short term job, do that on the side casually.

  • Coles, good employer for me back in the day.

I guess I failed to mention I already got the pizza job yesterday, so I guess I'll still go to the coles interview and see what happens, then I have my shift with the pizza place an hour later. Career progression is an interesting point but not really something I care about since I probably won't be working for longer then a year. Thanks for all the help guys

I used to stack shelves at Coles and I worked at a pizza place (independent, not a dominos).
I started off making pizza bases and eventually was "promoted" to delivery driver.
Personally I really enjoyed the delivery driving much more than Coles, but as others have said that depends on what you enjoy, whether you like driving, the place you're working at, your hourly rate and per delivery rate, etc.
I was still on my Ps then, so driving around in my fuel guzzling VK Commodore was still quite enjoyable, despite the downsides of having to pay for petrol and the wear and tear.
Anyway, I think I was on like 10 to 15 an hour plus a couple dollars per delivery, all cash in hand, so that made it seem like it was worth it on a busy night where you'd get a decent amount of deliveries.

Anyway, it was fun, I generally enjoy delivering goods, I learnt how to make pizza bases and how to make a good pizza , I worked with good people and it was an overall good experience that I value even today.
But yeah, I can see how working at Dominoes could be shit.

Coles on the other hand was just shit. So they had me stacking the shelves during business hours, which was mind numbingly shit. They gave me a couple shifts per week , but one week when the manager was trying to confirm my availability I said I wasn't available for whatever reason and then he stopped calling me for shifts. I'm guessing he just wanted people who were desperate for shifts and would work whenever he wanted them to, or I was shit, lol.

Anyway, I hope your uni degree will allow you to get into a job that isn't mind numbingly shit like that. Good luck and enjoy the pizza delivering.

    • That's interesting, and the job is at a Crust store, but the owner himself told me he started out as a delivery driver then he just bought the store.

  • Former Coles nightfill casual here. Started applying just after I finished high school and got the job just before I started uni. (Good time to apply is couple months before Christmas)

Pay wise was around $16 up until I turned 18 which moved to around $18 (Casuals get 25% loading). Very chill job, come in sometimes at 6pm, break load and start filling at 8 all the way to midnight. Hours are usually 8pm - midnight bud depends on store. Given my good availability at the time, I was working 6/7 days every single week.

You mainly just open up boxes and pack shelves. Occasinally you'll get customers asking where do I find this etc. By the end of the night you just go around and 'face up' the store meaning cleaning up here and there. Not much customer service but overall very good to have on the resume.

Availability dropped due to other commitments and they slowly cut my shifts. Ended up working there for around 1.5 years before moving on to other jobs.

    • I wish it was nightfill but it's not unfortunately. I think I'm going for the pizza job cause I keep hearing this thing about shifts getting cut if you don't have good availability, which I doubt I will.
