Name that plant question

Hi all,

Not part of a gardening forum so thought i would chance my arm here. On a recent trip to Bali we noticed a hanging vine that we would love to try and use at home

View the plant here+ Heres a better quality image from the actual hotel we stayed at

2 Questions:
* What is the name of the plant
* Would it grow in Australia (Sydney conditions)

We tried to ask some of the hotel staff but not much help and i cant seem to pinpoint via google.

Cheers all!

  • It could be Kudzu.
Very fast growing and considered a noxious weed. It can grow over other plants and trees and compete for resources.

For a native australian plant that's suitable for indoor use, you may wish to try Cissus antarctica (Kangaroo vine)

    Flowering: spring–autumn.
Distribution and occurrence: Widespread in warmer rainforest; chiefly in coastal regions north from Tathra and inland to the Liverpool Ra.
NSW subdivisions: NC, CC, SC, NT, CT, ST, CWS

  • It could possibly be Million hearts Dischidia (Dischidia ruscifolia)

    • Looks pretty similar and i love the look of it. Thanks! Any idea if you can buy locally?

      • I noticed it everywhere in Bali, even the airport carpark had it hanging over the edges. I haven't seen the exact same one here in Perth but plenty of places have other hoyas like the chain of hearts. Perhaps go to a local nursery or your local Bunnings if they have a good range of indoor plants and ask if they have any hoyas. You might not find the exact one but I am sure you will find something similar.

        • Thanks again - and yep you're right - not planning on finding the exact same type - just something similar in that lime green colour that over hangs pots in the same manner. Cheers!

Ok so i emailed the wife this thread earlier today and she replied recently with - so i emailed the hotel and asked they they said the name is Vernonia elaeagnifolia of the Asteraceae family wiki aka 'Curtain creeper'

seems like it can be grown in Australia, but having trouble locating a nursery in Sydney that stocks - will start contact companies, but if anyone has recommendations let me know please.

    Cheers!
