What is a good pocket camera for everyday/travel use

Hi everyone,

I am interested in getting a pocket camera for everyday/travel use. Something that can take high quality DSLR photos, with a screen that can flip out, and with a sturdy/well made body.

Something along the lines of the Sony RX100 IV, but much, much cheaper. Can anyone recommend / or point me to a few models that won't break the bank? Maybe $500ish?

Thanks in advance.

Also suitable for beginner/intermediate user.

  • Same question that was asked and answered by a professional photographer. You can't go wrong with a Canon Powershot

Here are some sample shots with my favourite PS camera, the Canon S95

There is some slight loss of detail because the images have been recompressed in JPG.

    • I have owned 2 PowerShots.both failed just after 1yr warranty. Seem designed not to last…

Edit: so then I got a small nikon pocket camera, also lasted around 1 year with barely any use. So not just canon!

Aren't pocket cameras a thing of the past? A decent smart phone is plenty good.

I helped a friend recently looking for a camera with the same criteria. I recommended looking at any of the following used models.

Here's a list of what I think each camera is worth, sorted in order from best to worst. If you can get any of these for less than the price I have listed, then I think you're getting a good camera for a great price. Obviously, the more expensive ones offer better features, or smaller sizes, or better quality, but you couldn't go wrong with any of these. If you look up reviews on google for any of these models you will find more infomation out there too, as they have all been heavily reviewed by now.

    Fantastic Cameras:
    Sony rx100 III $550
    Canon g7x $500
    Panasonic Lumix lx100 $500
    Sony rx100 II $500
    Sony rx100 $350

    Excellent Cameras:
    Canon g16 $320
    Canon s120 $300
    Canon g15 $300
    Canon s110 $240

Really good cameras that could be a bit cheaper to buy:
    Panasonic Lumix lx7 $240
    Nikon p7800 $230
    Nikon p7700 $200
    Canon s100 $170
    Fujifilm xf1 $150
    Nikon p310 $130

  • I go for the largest sensor in the smallest possible size. Ricoh GR or GR II

  • Have been travelling quite a bit over the past few years and take both the DSLR and also Canon G7x - when it comes to photo quality most of the time is almost impossible to tell them apart!
