I Want To Like Windows 10 But It Is Really Annoying Enough To Go Back To 7.

I installed Windows 10 3 months ago and I really want to like it - except for the following annoying problems that make my computer unuseable:

1) From the time I installed it to now my computer has been unsuitable to use as an audio player because Windows 10 continuously stops the playback to do … who knows - anyhow it's extremely annoying to have constantly pausing music. No problems with any other media files, just audio and it happens regardless of software. I have tried a gazillion fixes for this, nothing works..

2) Recently: the Start Menu randomly decides what shortcuts it will show with no rhyme or reason. Haven't counted but it seems like 50% of my applications are affected by this. Bonus annoyance: of the shortcuts that it decides are OK to show in the start menu some of them are white (no icon) and don't work. Read about fixes for this, haven't attempted.

3) More recently: boot to Windows login screen which does nothing when you press key or mouse so you cannot enter password. Reboot and it works properly - sometimes, the login screwup happens reguarly now.

4) Yesterday: I rearranged SATA cables in my case and hence they went into the motherboard in different ports to before. Gott in Himmel I have NFI why what happened next happened …

After plugging in cables I set the correct partition to boot from in BIOS and turned on pooter. It went to Windows 10 logo as normal … and did nothing else. I rebooted a few times, same thing. So after swearing etc. I unplugged SATA cables except Windows system SSD and two others and it booted to a recovery screen that basically said "You cannot do anything else unless you have Windows 10 installation media". Unplugged the rest of SATA cables EXCEPT the Windows SSD in - it booted normally. Plugged in all SATA cables - it boots normally.

Well I happened to reboot again and the login didn't work except this time it spent ages on "welcome" message with the spinny dots and froze. Since then it's been successfully logging in about 50% of the time with the login process stopping at various points before ands after entering pass.

It's been randomly deciding whether to load things or not: if it's not then it goes to a non-frozen screen (animations are working, mouse is working) but there's no way out other than resetting as ctrl+alt+del doesn't work. This happened to newly installed Fallout 4 and i assumed it was a game problem. But then it happened to Dirt Rally which has been a rock solid stable game. The problem got more and more frequent throughout today. Often it goes to a black screen and there are many reports of this being a Windows 10 problem. Everytime I have to reset: i ran chkdsk and it did it there: screen animations working, no response other than hard resetting.

Why can Windows 10 not handle a SATA cable changing ports?

Pooter works fine if it boots and decides to load something though :p

  • Well it seems build 1607 is the culprit for 4).

I tried installing build 10240 3 times today and each time I updated via windows update it went to the I/O error screen after appearing to freeze.

Then I managed to find an ISO of build 1607 and installed it and it frieze on the latter part of the install.

I've had no issues while on build 10240 with ssd.

So windows 7 it is for me not by choice :|

Just stick to 7. If it works and is familiar for you, save upgrading until you are forced to. I, like you, tried 10, but on a few computers but soon returned back to 7. Then again, maybe I'm just over learning anything new with technology

      • I think for most people here with Windows it was something new and ground breaking. So we've all invested countless hours configuring and optimizing our systems. Now its got to a point where we're no longer interested in the new things in operating systems and would rather use it other than needing to spend countless unproductive hours configuring the environment to our liking,,,, eg… Technology should meet our demands not the other way around.

  • using win 10, ended up installing anniversary update version since search/start menu fck ups.

never had any major issue after that

  • You just Gotta in Himmel and it will fix itself

  • I have my share of annoyances also, but they're not bad enough to go back to W7 which will lose support shortly.

Anniversary Update has just changed the way updates get installed. Windows has always decided to reboot your computer by itself without your input. You used to be able to put it off if you happen to be there, and still can. But if you step away, it will reboot on its own and shut down all your running programs! I hope you remembered to save.

You can schedule a "peak" time so that it cannot reboot itself without permission during this time, however, this period cannot exceed 12 hours. Outside of this time, it can reboot itself if you are not there to delay it. If you were in the middle of doing something important or downloading before you stepped away, you're about to lose it all.

If you have the Pro version (the only version I recommend) you can use gpedit to change permissions to turn this off, if you know how to.

This is probably my biggest gripe with it. The other thing is that welcome screen can no longer be disabled through any settings (unless you don't set a password). You have to hack it or find a workaround to disable it.

Windows 11 will arrive soon then all will be fine:)

  • I installed Windows 10 3 months ago and I really want to like it - except for the following annoying problems that make my computer unuseable:

Sounds like you having done any experimentation

    1) From the time I installed it to now my computer has been unsuitable to use as an audio player because Windows 10 continuously stops the playback >>to do … who knows - anyhow it's extremely annoying to have constantly pausing music. No problems with any other media files, just audio and it >>happens regardless of software. I have tried a gazillion fixes for this, nothing works..

It works perfectly for me I just let Windows complete it updates and no problems, might take an hour but that's it

    2) Recently: the Start Menu randomly decides what shortcuts it will show with no rhyme or reason. Haven't counted but it seems like 50% of my
applications are affected by this. Bonus annoyance: of the shortcuts that it decides are OK to show in the start menu some of them are white (no
icon) and don't work. Read about fixes for this, haven't attempted.

You can get rid of this by right ad screen and getting rid of the ads, also you can right click the item to ad to the start menu.

Also I'm unconvinced, 50% of the apps don't work and you don't name them? Sounds a lot of windows hating and expecting it to do the work for you. You have to do some research and set it up if you want to work the way you like it

    3) More recently: boot to Windows login screen which does nothing when you press key or mouse so you cannot enter password. Reboot and it works >>properly - sometimes, the login screwup happens reguarly now.

    Sounds like a pirated copy.

YOU DID not set the correct the partition disk to boot up in bios. I'm using windows 10 and it works like a charm maybe you should do a computer course.

I couldn't be bothered reading all of the above posts but the general theme here is why I changed to Apple OSx a few years ago.
I now have a problem, to use Mac OS I have to use Apple hardware. While it is nice in general, it is way over-priced and not very innovative like it used to be.
I can't bring myself to go back to windows again, especially after reading about the problems with windows 10. I've come to the conclusion there is no best PC package in terms of operating system and hardware.
A good OS with good hardware (properly priced) are mutually exclusive in 2016!

That's why you should learn how to hackintosh :) http://lifehacker.com/the-always-up-to-date-guide-to-buildin…

    • Well, you would have bought a brand new Mac with Mac OS. You should be comparing a brand new PC with Win 10 pre-installed. You would probably have an equivalent lack of problems.

The commenters here with negative experience have all been upgrading from a previous version, and a small portion will always experience incompatibilities with their hardware. Also, they may or may not have had the patience or technical ability to systematically isolate the issues and resolve them themselves. I think the other commenters providing advice and are happy with Win 10 actually outnumber the unhappy ones.

      • Not really, I am currently running the latest Mac OS on my 2011 MacBook Air and never had an issue. Every update has been seemless. As they annoyingly say "it just works". I remember wasting hours and hours of my life on windows, just to get it running properly. I really don't want to go back to that! I was anti-mac until I switched and will never go back. This thread just reminds me of why.

  • I went back - after 2 weeks of "boot up, 2 min up-time, crash, BSOD, reboot, repeat" and trying every possible fix available on the net I finally gave up.

It works well on my laptop but I guess my PC will be Win7 until I upgrade… :/

    • Just curious, was it a clean install or an upgrade install? I've done an upgrade install on my old laptop and it was dodgey. Wiped it and did a clean install and everything just worked without the need for any of the laptop's drivers.

      • Upgrade install onto a system with an older AsRock MB - no matter what I did I couldn't get it to accept the onboard graphics drivers. Haven't been game to try a clean install yet.

  • I had a lot of issues with Windows 10. I had continual issues with video drivers failing - even took it to my brother-in-law who works in IT. We tried many different solutions including buying new ram, new power supply and even changing motherboards the computer hangs and then screen shuts off and the computer needs to be forced to reset. At first we thought it was the video cards we put in with SLI (which we know work) and so removed one and even running a single video card it kept crashing. We then tried a completely different video card and it still crashed. Bluescreenview repeatedly showed this failure - dxgkrnl.sys

I have also had similiar issues with the load screen and the dots freezing and the computer restarting itself.

Finally after a good 5 months of not being able to find the issue and what seemed as random crashes (usually just word processing or browsing the internet - when I was gaming it was fine) I gave up and reinstalled windows 7 and my computer has been fine since.

  • Windows 10 = SPYWARE

    • Do you own an iPhone or or an Android phone (inparticular) because they collect infintiely way more information about you. Have any sort of social media account - they know nearly EVERYTHING about you. Comfortable with that? Yep, I bet you are!

Microsoft collects anonymous telemtry data used to enhance the OS. Sure, it can collect some more info if you opt-in to it but that's easily configurable but their privacy protection policies are first rate, I guarantee much better than say that Snapchat service you use. You clearly have little idea what you are talking about, did you read a clickbait article heading from 2015 and formed an opinion on that? Perhaps do a bit more homework.

  • ….enough to go to mac. I will never use windows again.

  • I have installed Windows 10 on five machines in the past 2 weeks - 3 desktops and 2 laptops. All of them were a a complete wipe, format and clean install from a USB flash drive. In each case it's installed without a hitch and worked perfectly from that moment forward. No hangs, no glitches, zero issues.

I understand that not everyone has had this experience, but I have to say - for me at least, Windows 10 has always been perfectly reliable and consistent, and I've never had a moment of regret moving from Windows 7 or 8.1.

Have Win10 on my work laptop and get the blank boot screen sometimes as well. I just press ctrl + alt + del and it password input pops up anyway.

For start menu since 7 I have been pressing the windows button and just typing the first few letters of what I'm looking for until I see it anyway so the shortcuts really haven't been an issue for me.

  • Windows 10 had a very very lenient 'non activation' condition.

eg. the old WinXP would go to a black screen and throw activation nag messages at you.

Win10 doesnt. It gives you a little message in the right bottom corner and it doesnt allow you to change the scheme.

    So what.

In effect you can run Win10 as a free o/s and not have too many downsides.

In that light AND with carefully selected hardware its a reliable FREE o/s.

Ok it has a price.. the store, the push ads, the telemetry but if they're given it away like this, then thats a fair price.
