The quickest way to get iron in your bloodstream is to drink Guinness or some other "stout" beer. Years ago, doctors prescribed it until that became illegal.

Nail gun. Problem is keeping the blood in your bloodstream afterwards.

      • Iron filings on your cappuccino would be the way to go.

I know you're joking but for anyone wondering if there is any truth to it:

The internet is full of pages telling you that Guinness has high iron but no sources to back it up. If you have access to journal papers, have a look for yourself to see some analysis of beer mineral content. One such paper you can read is:
Alcázar, A, Pablos, F, Martı́n, M, & González, AG 2002, 'Multivariate characterisation of beers according to their mineral content', Talanta, vol. 57, pp. 45-52.

This paper tested Guinness, among a range of other beers, and found its iron content to be 0.096mg/L. That means to get the same iron intake as on of these tablets, which contain 100mg, you would need to drink over 1000 litres. Even if we are generous and go by unsourced internet fluff pieces that state it has 0.3mg/L we are still looking at over 333 litres of Guinness.

Of course these tablets give you more than 12 times the required dose for men and 5 times for women. So to be fair you would still need 26 litres of Guinness to meet your daily requirements for men and 60 litres for women. So while it may be a fast method of delivery (not sure) to the bloodstream, a pint or two really doesn't contribute much and the negative health impacts would outweigh the iron benefits.

  • op - is it easy on your stomach?(you know constipation and such)

    • Probably will cause constipation since it doesn't have anything else but iron and folic acid. I'd recommend take some fibre to help with digestion.
I personally think Ferrograd C is better though since it has vitamin C in it which usually help with absorption of iron. also the ferrograd C is a modified released tablet so it works like the panadol osteo, slowly release the iron to your system so it doesn't cause digestive side effects.

  • I find these much better tolerated than the "sulphate" salts. I have good feedback to suggest "Maltofer" is even better, but they are six times the price of Ferro f.
