Harvey Norman is refusing and canceling all gift card purchases made with amex!

      Probably not for visa!

      • so people are buying $300 gift cards online at HN and getting cancellation emails ? sorry havnt been able to read the 11 pages.
I thought it was e gift card is pretty much instant

        • +1

Correct canceled if payment by amex

        • +2

@Turd: Why the hell would they do that? I can understand Vpay cards purchased in-store and used elsewhere, but aren't Harvey Norman gift card purchased online only redeemable at Harvey Norman?!

        • +1

@bauser99: No one knows why. It is ridiculous.

  • +2

I purchased HN gift card online 2 days ago - $200 via using Amex card, it was approved. Don't ask me how HN determine whether to approve it or not. I received an email to say "under review", then the next day they approved my egift voucher.

    • +1

Purchase a $100 and a $200 separately and purchase the 2nd one after you receive the 1st one.Maybe use different HN accounts as well!

  • +1

I just bought $300 vpay from HN Gordon (and received Amex email instantly). Guy pointed me to the multiple warning signs and said "you understand the risks? There are no refunds. You can buy one only." He was reasonably nice about it.

He said "we got these signs to put up by Amex, don't know why. I just sell you the card. Whatever happens between you and Amex is your business."

    • +1

      That guy is a champ!!

Should I go and get one? Hmmmmmmm ~20min ride up there.

    • +1

      THANKS!! Got 2!!! he he.

He didnt point the details to me.. Just let me do it and knew the $300 amount hahaha

      So good WOOOT!

      FREE MONEY!!!

    • The check-out person at Moore Park flatly refused to let me buy visa pre-paid card with AMEX. There was a prominent sign saying that at the counter anyway but I thought I would at least try.

I ended up buying an Apple watch during their VIP night and split the payment for 2x$100 cashback.

      • Did you ask if you could buy via MASTERCARD? lol

      • +1

        that's just pure BS.

    • I was at HN Gordon over the weekend and couldn't find any vpay cards in the giftcards shelf in the electronics section. Am new to this vpay thing, from the website (https://www.pubpayments.com.au/site/prepaid-products/prepaid…), it says there is no plastic card?! So how do you go about buying it in HN? Do you just rock up to the cashier and ask to buy the vpay card? Can you load any amount and is there a processing fee?

      • -1

Do you just rock up to the cashier and ask to buy the vpay card?

Yes. There is no plastic card. Just a piece of paper/receipt that they give you with the details on it.

        Can you load any amount

Yes, but if the amount <> $300 then you're not doing OzBargain right

        is there a processing fee?

Yes, $5.50. As in, pay $305.50 for a VPay worth $300

  • Just spend $300 last weekend at Harvey Norman store and I got 2 credits $100 and $20.
Not sure if it's an error or what. But happy with the additional $20 credit.

    • Probably $20 for the mobile wallet offer, did you use Apple pay or android pay?

      • Didn't use any of those. Paid using card.

    • +1

Ok … I think i have solved this.
I paid using NAB AMEX and they are currently having offer until 31 Dec for spending $100 at HN they will credit $20.

Another offer from NAB AMEX for the same period for spending $20 or more at Telstra/Optus (Paid on Virgin bill get the credit as well) for $20 credit.

      • I've got an nab amex,
        I'll check this out.

      • Where is this offer??

  • still havent spend my Harvey $.. might make for a decent boxing day sale deal

  • +1

anyone price matched at harvey norman.

    This exclusion seems pretty silly

*Competitors that do not operate multi-store omnichannel retail operations

    • Yes I have. It just means that the competitor must have a physical and online store.

      • this actaclly mean that they wont match store like wireless1 and mobileciti fro mobile as they only have 1 store front.

    • I was also told that they don't price match manufacturers e.g Microsoft store

      • +1

Seems like they dont do a lot of things, and rather just rip off customers that's what they do best since the 80s and 90s

  • +1

I personally don't believe in "Price beat guarantee" slogan in some shops as they are so many exclusions not written anywhere and the staff even asking why I don't shop in the cheaper store. It's just to attract customer to come to their store. I think ACCC needs to step in to tighten the stores.

  • HN nunawading still has VPAY giftcards if anyone is after some. got one yesterday. have a new AMEX coming from CBA from free upgrade to Diamond Awards which I had already registered before so will be getting another VPAY when it arrives.

    • +4

How do u know the card number if you do not have the card yet?

  • Guys, I am thinking of buying a macbook air 13' costing about 1500, using the amex harvey norman, have 2 cards registered for the offer.

I have gone through all the comments and can see recently HN has only got stricter and the folks at HN, Broadway (the nearest store to me) appear unhelpful.

You reckon if it is worth taking a chance and go ahead and make the purchase or do you completely advise against it? Thanks in advance for your advice.

    • Stricter on what?

Have split payment using 3 cards and no problem.

  • Went to HN Moorabbin and asked for vpay or visa gift card but the lady said they have eftpos cards. I said to put 300 in eftpos card. Paid with Amex but later realised it was Harvey Norman giftcard. Asked them to refund , they tried several times but couldn't process refund. Asked the guy to process cash refund instead. Got $300 cash refund and email from Amex for $100 back. What's the chances of getting 100$ credit. Or can they block it??

    • +2

Id say your chances are extremely good as the refund was in cash and not to your Amex.

    • +3

Congrats! You just made $100 easily.

    • +2

This is the best case scenario, free money for no fee!

    • +3

Poor person worker, she will probably get spoken to and perhaps a warning

    • +1

I've had this happen. Paid for an item, they couldn't supply it so got a refund. Inserted a different card for the refund and still got the credit.

  • Hi All
Sorry if I am asking a repeating question (as I am confused after getting various comments).

I understand HN is randomly cancelling eGift cards when paid by AMEX.
Also VPAY is hit and miss.

However can we still purchase Harvey Norman Gift Cards directly from the stores?

    Thanks

    • +1

Hit and Miss, depending on store staff, time of day, time of month, how they feel etc.. YMMV

BUT you can use VISA or MASTERCARD!!! lol

  • Bought a $300 Vpay card at HN Belrose NSW today - lots of Vpay cards displayed on racks near the cash registers (in the computers / electrical section) - no signs anywhere about AMEX not being allowed for gift cards - no questions asked when processing the transaction - email confirming $100 statement credit received within 2 minutes :)

    • Is your receipt showing HN or HN @ Domayne?

Few people have reported that HN @ Domayne works fine - anyone had experience at HN Ryde (which is HN @ Domayne)?

      • +2

AMEX statement shows DOMAYNE AV/IT BELROSE - printed receipt shows "Harvey Norman at Domayne Belrose"

I did the same at the beginning of the month, never received email confirmation and AMEX took 10 days to post the credit. It looks like AMEX have updated their system to correctly track "HN @ Domayne" transactions now!

  • Anyone got a list of Brisbane HN that are allowing VPAY and not Domayne?
    Please!

    • Go to HN Garden City, I just visited and there were plenty of epay visa gift card which is better than vpay. I bought 6 and no question asked, Amex confirmation emails received immediately.

    • Harvey Norman Everton Park for physical cards - plenty of cards in their computer section (behind the counter)

  • Is AMEx credit instant?

    • No

    • The confirmation has always been instant for me (email) but the credit shows up after 3-5 days.

  • Anyone know any stores which still allow you to buy gift cards with Amex in Sydney?

    • +1

Today I bought 3 x $300 VPay cards in HN Blacktown (near Poco). Split over 3 x Amex cards. The server didn't even bat an eyelid.

    • Went to HN Castle Hill (Home Hub) yesterday and bought 4 x $300 CG's. The operator did mention the Amex deal would not be valid with CG's, but was quite happy to take my Amex cards to put them through after I said that's fine. Got my confirmations emails soon after that. Waiting for my credits now….

  • Went to HN at Melbourne CBD (QV), they had a sign "not accepting AMEX for any gift cards purchase". Staff were just so rude as if I was a beggar.

    • did you ask if visa was ok or what about Mastercard?

isn't that a vit racist against amex?

      • They said I could pay with anything except AMEX. When I questioned more they just said they had a sign at the counter with terms and conditions.

        • LOL t&c's of the store? That's racist!

Tell them you will call amex to complain, it is not fair what if your only credit card was a amex card and you really wanted to buy a gift card??

        • @Turd: I told them I wanted to buy a JBL flip3 and a gift card for my dad and they said I could come back to buy after 31 Dec …

        • @jc89:

Damn - i was planning to go there to do my GC run!

        • @jc89: why that particular date? It is absurd

        • @Turd: Because AMEX Offer ends that date

        • @jc89: that's very discriminatory towards amex holders IMO. I think a case for accc

        • @Turd: I should have taken a photo of the counter with the sign!

        • @jc89:

Sign is still there on the counter at HN QV - i was able to pay for my $7 purchase and $300 gift card - the cashier did it in two transactions tho, and took my details for the $300 transaction. No other comments from the cashier. Now cross fingers.

        • @deanwan: Nice! thanks for letting us know

        • I reckon stores like this need to reported to AMEX. I am sure they would be disgusted.

Notice on the TV ads it carries the AMEX logo which you would imagine is partly funded by them, Diners and Go which appear on the ads.

  • harvey norman nunawading is now only issuing vpay printed on paper as they are out of cards. how can i spend this

    • +1

By following the instructions on the piece of paper you received :)

    • +2

      rtfm?

    • how long ago did you purchase the vpay?

  • I went yesterday to HN bondi junction and they said they do not sell VPAY cards anymore. I think it is highly likely they will miraculously start selling them again on Jan 1

  • Have been successfully buying (and receiving AMEX credits a day or so later) prepaid VISA gift cards, ie physical cards, from Harvey Norman Everton Park (Qld) over the past week. You can load them with any amount you like, but obviously in this instance $300 is the magical figure. Unless of course you want to buy 3 x $100 gift cards together as Christmas presents, then you get 1 of those 3 for free. No problems or questions (or signs!) from any staff. Happy buying if you have any offers left on your cards.

    • Of course the $5.95 purchase fee per card eats into the profit though, so a $300 card is much better value

      • Can you put two credit cards onto the one visa gift card for $5.95?
ie $600 credit on 1 card?

        • Dont know, I didnt try. In theory should work, given that each card will be charged by HN, and I've done similar to that with other recent Amex deals eg Hilton deal, I part paid hotel stay at reception using different cards each morning, and got all credits.

Makes sense if you want to avoid multiple $5.95 fees, and carry less prepaid visa cards

        • @Crazy Diamond:
The assistant showed me the Visa load machine and I chose option 7 which was the last option (300 plus fee).

        • @mmd: Are you saying highest amount is $300 to load?
Or can you load $300 and then use another AMEX card and $300 making total $600 for $5.95 fee?

        • @PLANT:
Looks like max load is 300 plus fee as that was the last option on the load machine.
Not sure if the attendant can manually type in 600…

  • +2

I bought $300 + 5.5 fee vpay in Nunawading Melb last weekend. The cashier girl just warning me I am not able to get any refund back if any problem with this purchase. and I said just proceed it. she was happy for me to get all my 5 amex cards done. the credit is received today in account.
tried to transfer vpay to my Coles prepaid card but fail, so use vpay to pay all my bills without drama.

    • Can we only pay for bills if the amount is under $300? For bigger bills like rate, rego… are we be able to make multiple payments?

  • Bought beats 3 for $345 and a $250 visa card at belrose and got $200 back (split on 2 Amex)

  • go directly to your bill payment e.g council rate website then make the payment using your vpay credit card number. (same as you pay by your personal credit card). not from your banking website.

  • Cleveland had sign…. Not sure if I got the dumbest hn employee ever….
Or he was acting super evasive..
Asked for visa card and said only sell hn gift cards.
    Asked for vpay."What's that?"
Could not find on machine…. Foxtel, Google…. Useless.

  • HN Oxley said I cannot buy Prepaid Visa Card with Amex, I asked why not, she said it is a prepaid card and the current Amex promotion therefore I cannot pay with Amex. It is BS!! and makes no sense at all with her reasons.

    • Haha, was she the chuppy lady? They always tell BS to their customers. I went there a couples of times but did not buy anything because they were so rude and very unhappy.

I bought 5 prepaid visa card at HN Garden City, no questions asked, a young lady at the cashier was so nice and lovely, she works there on weekends, probably a student working part-time job.

      • She is about 20ish, she wasn't very confident when she answered my question. She must think I am retarded, I went to Garden City, very nice and friendly cashier. I will go there for all my future purchase even it is a bit out of my way.

        • Just tell her to put it though anyway and not worry bout whether you'll get a cash back or not, as that's ur only card.
You will get the cash back, Harvey Norman are just upholding the terms and conditions, but amex won't know what u spent.

        • @mmd: She will not let me pay, unlike some other stores you are given a warning and still let you pay. In short in her mind "PISS OFF, Haha you cannot pay with Amex and cannot get the credit. I am so JEALOUS wish I have a Amex card."

BTW anyone knows who is $100 out of pocket in this case ?

  • +1

Confirmed - Bought two VPay (non-plastic) gift cards from HN @ Domayne (North Ryde), received email straight away and credit came through this morning. Store had signs that Amex offer not applicable on GC and cashier also warned me but I just acted like I have no idea about what the Amex offer is.

To be on safe side, I did buy $2 stationary item to ensure that Amex system doesn't identify automatically that I purchase a gift card.

    • +1

Harvey Norman middle management are dipcrack dumbos.

Clearly they do not have amex themselves and do not know how to survive in Australia and complain when price of housing and food goes up

      • +1

        @Turd
That is not a fair comment.
The staff reflects the society in surrounding area. They try thair best.
HN is happy to sell HN gift cards not Visa giftcards.Amex instructed not to sell gift cards through amex.
Now we can find ways to cheat the system.
If the staff is not coming to party we can't just blame them. They just follow the orders.
Just labeling them Dumbos is very poor.

        • +1

Do you have proof that amex instructed them not to sell gift cards?

        • HN is happy to sell HN gift cards

Then why did they cancel all HN gift card orders placed online??? What about the reports in this thread of people not being allowed to buy HN physical gift cards in store???

Turd is right. HN management suck at their job. We ozbargainers knew that years ago and nothing has changed.

        • @PBG:
Why would HN refuse to sell gift cards which is money in their pocket?
HN prices are rip off unless you try to price match.
If we are playing by the rules and they are dishonoring we have the right to complain.
If we are trying to use the loophole and if it goes through good for us otherwise move on instead of demeaning people work at these businesses.
They may not have amex cards or previlages you may have that doesn't give you the right to demean the staff.

        • +2

@sachy: the staff make the customer feel like they are criminals by using their cards to purchase an item at their stores.

why can't they be nice and assist customers instead of being rude.

what happens between the customer and their credit card provider has nothing to do with the retailer

        • @sachy:

Why would HN refuse to sell gift cards which is money in their pocket?

Because, as Turd so elequantly put it, they are dipcrack dumbos.

Turning away sales in their own store because of a lack of understanding of a basic payment system. Can you think of another reason why they would turn away sales?

        • +2

          @Turd:

I couldn't agree more! I felt like they were thinking that I am using a stolen credit card.

    • Mate could you please confirm if u have received the cash back in your account .. thinking of buying from the same store

  • Will this still work with buying Harvey Norman's gift cards online? Or are the orders being cancelled?
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/gift-cards

I am late to the party :-(

Also are vpay purchased instore only?

    • +3

      online orders are being cancelled

vpay are to be purchased instore only, but can only be used online (no physical card) and will cost $5.50 to activate plus the amount you wish up to $300
You can also buy a visa prepaid gift card which costs $5.95 to activate plus the amount you wish up to $300. You get a physical card which can be used pretty much everywhere.
