Looking for replacement 8 inch tablet

Hi,

I'm looking at buying for someone 8 inch android tablet. I previously bought them hp8 for around $90, and they loved it (used for reading books/newspaper only, at home and travel). Unfortunately dropped and no longer works. Replacement doesn't need to be any better, but looking in officeworks, I think 7 inch Lenovo isn't wide enough, and 10 inch too big. So I want 8 inch, but I can't see anything cheap available locally, and not sure of Chinese brands (which I would be happy to buy, if they are good). Any suggestions? Ideally I'd like to spend no more than $100. Thanks.

Galaxy Tab 8 is your only option really. Nobody really makes 8 inchers any more.

Xiaomi MiPad would go over your budget by $50+ on 11/11 and it would probably stay Kitkat forever and I don't think there is much custom ROM development right now. That said, the performance it packs is impressive (Tegra K1 + 2GB RAM) and the screen is high resolution. Another plus in your usage sitaution is that it's 4:3 (16:10 is better with videos but with books and websites, 4:3 is better imo).

Other than that I think Nvidia Shield K1 probably would become cheaper soon as well (Black Friday).

I kinda don't look into Chinese tablets much so my recommendation is kinda incomplete, but you probably could look into Teclast and others as well.

    • Got a xiaomi phone, and quite pleased with it. Ill check it out. Thanks.

      • Just do bear in mind that it has been superseded fairly long time ago (hence the price tag).
That said, Android tablet market has been fairly stagnant with flagships (2014 SoC are still at the top end), so I don't think you'd find much problems with the hardware being outdated.

        • Yes. As long as Google books and an internet browser work on it (which I think they will), then all good.
