  • It really depends on how far you want to go, lodge it with your local police station or via the online crime portal

    1. Report to ACORN online portal, acorn.gov.au
    2. Go down to station and make a statement, make sure you get copies of the statement
    3. Submit a paypal claim and give them copies of the statement, they should refund you the money no problems

How much money are we talking here, $50-100 dollars, is it really worth all the time and effort, $200 or more I would certainly make the effort, but a scam is a scam
Lodge dispute with paypal, report it to police, get a statement

What did you buy out of curiousity?

    • THe problem is I transfer money through online bank transfer. Asked bank to send a request to ask for money back, but chances are very slim ..

      Its for a phone $500

First rule of an online transaction, pay with paypal
Face to face, deal with cash and take a friend, never never never ever pay by bank deposit, it is not secure and unfortunately professional scammers are going to empty accounts and move on very quickly

You could possibly write to the FIO (Finance Ombudsman) and explain yourself, unfortunately the banks aren't going to care much as you've gone through a direct transfer and they see it as a valid account / recieving bank account and thats where their real help ends

The other bank may comply and deem a refund, maybe…

        • I know that, but she sound so genuine (fkn bitch) etc…Initially she actually asked for payment on Paypal, but refunded me afterward (excuse is she doesn't like to wait long for money to be in bank), so I thought she's quite genuine, so decided to transfer instead. She even gave me a AUSpost tracking number. Definite lapse of judgement here!

          @Droid11:

Thats the alarm bell right there
Probably made a cheque payment from your account possibly, I would of steered away from it at this moment instantly
I do feel for you though, people can sound genuine and then wham, take advantage of your kind nature

Paypal is an instant payment if you use a credit or debit card, I would of said to her full stop, this is the offer I make, this is my payment terms to protect "both of us"

        • @studiosoundguy: also I got her mobile number (Optus) is which now disconnected. Any chance Optus would disclose details about her? Probably not (not sure why I even asked).

So angry right now, I would even hire a private investigator just for the sake of my anger!

        • duplicate.

        • @Droid11:

How do you know the mobile account was optus?

        • @Gofast: Cuz when I called, the voice read "Optus advise the number you have dialled is disconnected"

        • @Droid11:

I don't get why they would bother to disconnect the number - if it was a $2 sim why not just throw the sim away?

        • @Droid11: I hope that she is held accountable.

          @Droid11:

You could lodge a fraud investigation with Optus
When people sign up to sim card services they usually need to provide some form of ID / Medicare Number / Passport details
They won't disclose information to you but to the police they certainly can

It all boils down to the crime ring responsible and if they have fraudulenty gained access to the SIM, most likely if its disconnected so fast (Burner phone / Sim most likely)

I would pursue it, you could crack a huge fraud case if you can track the person down.

  • Well it's trivially easy to conduct criminal activity online activities without being able to be traced provided one does things a certain way - but then again I read over and over again how very sophisticated online criminals (ripping off banks for millions) are caught by stupid things like using an email for a website email with real address because they presumably just couldn't be arsed making a safe email or they just think they won't be caught.

Paypal is most likely fraudulent (though never underestimate criminal stupidity/laziness)

Phones I don't know much about but beat in mind you can be calling untraceable VOIP when you think you're calling a mobile.

I'd report it at least, I mean why wouldn't you. But chances of getting back what's yours are probably low.

  • how much would a private investigator typically cost I wonder?

I lost sleeps over this thing, and it's giving me great distress…really wanna find her to put my mind to bed.

I'm not even bothered about the money now

    • A PI would cost about $150 per hour.
The IP address is transmitted with the e mail for most accounts, but not all.
The PI would need to access the e mail from the first device it was read on.
The PI should be able to obtain subscriber details from the IP address.
The whole thing would not take long. It is bread and butter work.

    • If you have their email address, you can use a service like http://www.didtheyreadit.com/ to check whether they have read the email.

This service will also provide the IP address of the person who read the email and possibly even their location. It's not foolproof but it's worth a try.

  • I doubt the ISP would give up the details.

The scammer probably used a fake IP or a foreign one.

    • nah, one thing for sure she's in WA.

  • How much did you get scammed by is it a lot of money or do you just want to get them back based on mosque and principle?

Send me their details I can find them easily or at least their last know location and etc personal data and files etc.

well $500 bucks…like you said, I'm not stressed about the money, more stressed & scarred mentally ..

Appreciate if you could help mate!

      • I can do my best my skills in this department are mediocre now at best but I do like a challenge. Can't promise anything sorry and your best bet if you want to take this up would be to go the police or similar etc isp hmm. Sucks you got scammed mate yeah gumtree is a big hit and miss. I have only been very lucky so far.

  • Let it go. That need for "justice" is going to eat you alive. I know because I recently had my iphone stolen. I had no idea who took it but I tracked him down. Got his address and even a picture of him. I called the cops from right outside his front door and they wouldnt even come out to talk to the guy. It was frustrating knowing that my phone was literally 2 metres away on the other side of the guy's front door and I couldn't get it back. I had to walk away. That need for "justice" is still eating at me.

My advice… unless you are willing to do something outside the law(not recommended), let it go. Even if you track the person down, cops wont help you if you go by the book.

    • you probably right , that's the sucky part about living in this country with soft "justice"

  • according to google, you could track people just with their phone number. Is ittrue though or just a scam?

    • +1

What's your phone number? I'll let you know.

LOL. No, it's not possible to track somebody by just knowing their phone number. If you had access to their phone and installed some software on it, then sure you could track them.

      • Send them a message and hide a bug in it?

    • Yes you can, but you need to have the correct authority and some very cool kit.

  • Hi all, if I got this lady's new phone number & real namee, any chance I could trace her down? Any way possible? Please PM me…

    • I would do but it seems that someone is deleting my comments. Sorry

      • pm me then
