PS4 Replacement from JB Hi Fi?

My PS4 is on the fritz. Constantly ejecting discs, and beeping like it's trying to eject a disc even when there's nothing in the system.

Luckily, when I got the console in late 2014 I invested in an extended warranty from JB Hi Fi. It's a replacement warranty. Now, I know they don't actually have any "old" PS4's left in stock so presumably they will replace it with a Slim. Has anyone had any experience with this?

What I'm really wondering is if I could take it back, and pay the difference to nab a PS4 Pro as the replacement. Is this possible?

Any input would be appreciated!

FYI, my PS4 had the same issue. It's a known problem with a simple fix. There's a screw that needs to be tightened (accessible without pulling apart the console). I'm on my phone so can't easily find the link at the moment, but there's a page about it on the Sony support site.

This is not a permanent fix i had a console with the same problem. it may work for a short time but it will go back to ejecting discs and trying to eject discs.

This is a well known problem which is why they changed to a button on the later model "fat" ps4

      • Yep, I've read up about it and know there are fixes but as above I'm concerned half measures would only be temporary. I'd rather get the brand new replacement machine I'm entitled to!

I saw someone mention they got store credit from JB and upgraded to a larger hard drive model when the same happened to their PS4 which would be perfect, but I'm not sure if they just got lucky or if that's common practice.

I have one argument that may help you.
if they offer you a ps4 slim you could tell them you need a playstation 4 with an optical port which the ps4 slim does not have but the ps4 fat and the ps4 pro does.

i don't really see the problem with you paying the price difference to get a ps4 pro anyway.
idk if you need the port or not but some headsets like turtle beach wireless uses the optical port to work plus other uses like audio setups.

I don't see why they wouldn't though as your would be spending even more money with them.

        • @Axelstrife: That's a good idea, thanks for the tip!

        • My GoPro Hero 3 Black broke, while the 4's were released. I got the purchase price as store credit and got the new one on a 'good discount' from the salesperson. This is standard practice AFAIK.

  • It's a known design flaw. We have a thicky folded piece of paper permanently under the foot by the eject button. Seems to work.

Although if I had an extended warranty I would be taking it back. I was thinking about doing the same, but it was bought from dick smith. Never got around to it.

I think you have a right to request a remedy. You are using it as intended, and it's not fit for purpose as eventually many of this console version get this problem.

  • Extended warranties aren't needed if you have proof of purchase …

    • Agreed. I was thinking about going the "Statutory Warranty" claim, but my energy levels are very low atm.

Piece of paper seemed easier. And now I have weaned myself off ESO I play far less :p

  • The warranty is not provided by JB it's dealt with through a third party company.

Chances are if they choose to replace (and they can choose to repair) They will determine the replacement model. It only has to be same or better. And if you read fine print they can replace with refurb.

JB don't manage the warranty and going in will result in you being directed to call the warranty company if they don't do it on your behalf.

    • WTF are you serious? That's ridiculous!

I'm going to give them a call today and see what they say.

Update time… it worked! I got a PS4 Pro, Dishonored 2, and Rise of the Tomb Raider for a grand total of $150. God damn I'm stoked!

The warranty company was super easy to deal with, and sent my claim to my store of choice immediately. The people at JB were also really great, and before I even suggested it the manager floated the idea of a Pro. They didn't even test the machine, just took me at my word, and even though the bundle I bought years ago included Destiny in the price they weren't interested in taking the game back and refunded the full price I paid years back.

Maybe I should have grabbed Watch Dogs 2 and Skyrim for $39 as well, but I've got more than enough to play at the moment.
