Car Door Dent by Another Driver

So I'm in a bit of a dilemma.

On Saturday I received a moderately large door dent on my car by another driver.

Thankfully the driver left a name and phone number on an envelope attached to my windscreen.

I have so far left them a message saying I appreciate them giving my details and I will be getting my car inspected on how much the repair will be.

I'll be getting the inspection tomorrow. But I am wondering what happens next?

Do I get the quote for the repair and ask them to pay the entire amount?

Evidence that I actually have:
I have 2 dashcams one in the front and one in the back. Both captured the licence plate.
There is CCTV in the area so I should be able to have the footage of them dooring me and putting the envelope on my windscreen.

  • are you going through insurance or cash in hand?

  • i think you could claim it from the other persons insurance if it costs much.

  • even minor repairs can be costly. may be worth it for them to go through insurance.

  • Two options, and it is up to you which you choose.

    1) Get a quote or two, call the person who hit you and give them the oppurtunity to pay cash. Give them a reciept saying they have paid (a letter or stat dec - signed by you) to cover them from repercussions.

    2) If the quote is several thousand you can contact your insurance company who will pay the repair bill. Then, if you are deemed not at fault, your insurance will chase the other driver, or driver's insurance for the money.

  • Give the driver the other opportunity to pay cash in the first instance before you go through insurance. It will just push up either of your premiums if you go through insurance companies.

Got an inspection for the dent and was quoted 200. Called the owner and asked what they want to do. We both agreed to do cash in hand.

I think a good solution for both of us.

  • Great outcome.

Do you think they left their details because they saw your dashcam? Which dashcam are you using anyway?

A car reversed and hit my parked car, they left a note but left a phone number in very messy writing where i can't work out what the numbers are.

    • I am not sure. Potentially it could be. Or maybe they were just honest.
