iPad Pro 9.7" Cellular - Buy Here or US?

Missed out the 20% of Kogan sale - Darn!
The cheer20 has not produced any really good deals

Looking for IPAD Pro 9.7 with Cellular. 32GB or if the price is only a bit more, 128GB. Don't care on colour. Will need the pencil too which is a wopping 145 bucks!.

Options are:

  • Grey import in AU
  • AU Stock + claim GST when I fly out to Canada and US end of November
  • Buy in US (e.g. Amazon to a locker) when in the US

I found a good deal - ipad pro 9.7 32GB LTE pre-owned for $689 which will give me GST refund… BUT after reading the ozmobile reviews, decided the risk isn't worth it… https://www.ozmobiles.com.au/cheap-ipad-ipod-smartwatch/appl…

Any tips appreciated.

  • I would buy here, especially since Australian consumer laws are pretty solid and you won't be left high and dry. As an example, I purchased a 6tb WD black HDD from B & H which was DOA on arrival, but because I discarded the outer cardboard manufacturers packaging they would not refund OR exchange and directed me to send it back to Vietnam for a replacement… wow

  • Are you asking recommendations on the three options above?

Firstly, I used to buy an Iphone on Kogan (one and only) which I believe grey import in 2014 and it is still running so I guess it is okay to buy these product.

Secondly, even though the grey import stock is good (another benefit of this is you will not have to carry ipad box around while travelling, you will have extra space for other things in your luggage), I personally suggest that you should buy electronic devices at their actual store (e.g apple products should be bought at apple store) as it can reduce later complications regarding to warranty policies after sales.

Thirdly, calculate a price of Australian stock minus tax claim from TRS and compare this figure with purchase price in US. If the number is less than buying in US, then buy ipad here in Australia otherwise vice versa. P/S grey import stock can be cheap but it should not be cheaper than the other two options.

Last but not least, I won't take any risk buying that pre-owned one.

These are all my opinion. Hope they help.

  • Thank you for responses. To clarify.

Looking for a good deal. Just outling a few options

I could of course buy HN and use my Amex for $100 off plus 10% gst

    Hoping to do better

  • Buy in Australia. The extra cost for the consumer laws is worth it.

I would monitor Amazon's deals page. Black Friday is coming up here so there could be good deals to be had.

  • I would buy local and claim back the GST to ensure I had a good warranty. You see posts fairly often on Ozbargain where people complain that something they purchased overseas isn't working. So much easier to be able to walk into any Apple store in Australia and get good service.

  • Id take a look at the Optus deals.
You pay by the month and get data included.
Not sure if the TRS would be claimable though?
