Buying a Used Private Car for The First Time

I am a 20 year old driver still on my Red-P and have just put deposit down for a 2014 Hyundai Veloster from a private seller. I am going to pick it up this weekend so I need to get car insurance sorted ASAP.

I am planning on putting the car under my mother's name and thinking of getting comprehensive car insurance but not sure if I need to to list myself as one of the drivers as that increases my insurance price drastically. What happens if I get into an accident but I am not listed as a driver of the car?

I also plan on letting my younger sister drive the car once she gets her license so would I also need to list her as well?

I have many friends who tell me they don't list themselves so it just confuses me a whole lot.

Cheers on any advice given.

  • Jump on to one of the many insurance websites and get some quotes. Coles insurance is relatively inexpensive. As is progressive direct online. The web sit are very clear and ask all the right questions.

Any drivers (especially under 25s) usually need to be listed. You can add your sister later when she gets her license. But if she is on her L's already then list).

If you're not listed and have a crash then you'll be in a world of pain (financially and possibly physically).

Check out the online insurance quote sites and get some quotes that way.

  • list yourself, yes it's more, but if you don't………

Depends on which insurance company you use.
For Coles, your policy MUST cover for under 25 year olds. Just by ticking that box, the price will increase dramatically.
For AAMI, you'll need to pay extra on top of the standard excess because of your age/inexperience.
I'm 20 and my car is under my name, but the insurance is under my dads. I didn't list myself as an additional driver because that will cost me over $2000. I'm paying around $900 right now. If I happened to crash, I'll just have to pay the extra excess which is still lower than $2000.

    • What insurance company are you with?

      • AAMI

  • Just car insurance. Perfect for young ricer

NRMA does insurance for anyone driving the car. But the excess is greater for Under 25 etc. Worth a look.
The risk of not naming you as a regular driver is that the insurance company could argue that you're driving the car 90% of the time, so you should be named, but have avoided doing so to pay a lesser premium, so they can refuse payout as you've not disclosed accurate information when applying for the policy.

  • If you are the regular driver of the car, you will have to named on the insurance. An insurance company will easily prove this, when they discover that your parents are the primary drivers for more than one vehicle. The insurance contract will become void. You can reduce your premium slightly by having your parents on the premium in addition to yourself.
