Newbie Router Networking Question

I know this sounds awefully simple question.

In order to login to my router's web interface, I need to use a port address!!

i.e. From a Chrome browser, using 192.168.1.1 does not work; so to connect to the router I need to use 192.168.1.1:8000

I have not seen this on a router before. Anybody know why? Why is it like that and can it be turned off to act like a 'normal' router ? Thanks for your help.

If you do not specify the port number, the web browser will automatically connect to port 80.
Maybe look if there is a setting to change your router's interface to be served to port 80 instead of port 8000.

  • Brand, model?

  • Nice one miicah, pretty well spot on.

The spanish (translated) says that the 192.168.1.1 is for basic configuration and that the 192.168.1.1:8000 is for the advancted configuration. The password and username in the article are exactly the same as what we use, so I should probably change it (people would have to guess WAN (public) address tho!!.

I will check again, but I was pretty sure that 192.168.1.1 does not work, only 192.168.1.1:8000 works. That's what confuses me. But will confirm.

  • you can also check if the router appears as a device in the control panel; that way all you need to do is click on the device to access the portal; or also try an app if there is one

    • Didn't think of that, will give it a go, thanks.
