$140 for a torch? is it magical.. like maybe you make a shadow puppet with it and the puppet comes to life?

I paid about $10 for my powerful/small LED headlight from Anaconda.. batteries last hundreds of hours.
I'd buy 14 of them and strap them all over my body/bike before forking out $140 for a single torch.

To end on a less cynical note: I suppose if you are an elite cyclist who really has some dosh then -perhaps- this torch offers superior distance/durability/weight.. but then maybe it just offers superior mark-up.

      @Stitchy LOL

and who in their right mind would pay $329 initially?!

      • cheers for LOL.. kinda stole joke off blackbooks where bernard rants about a magical pen, you draw a cow and the cow comes to life.. funny stuff

i guess the price for things and how much you are prepared to pay for something is all relative. i paid a lot more for my bike lights recently. previously with my cheaper light, cars would frequently miss me on the road. now, cars see me, even from far away and i feel so much safer on the roads. i am just a regular cyclist who commutes to work. i think that this is a pretty good price for those in the market for a pretty decent front light.

    • p.s. but yeah.. if I was doing a lot of night commuting from work, then I agree that a quality bright light would be great.. really blind those mofo blind-drivers! i'm a mega-low income earner so $140 is beyond me.

  • I just got back on my bike after 2 years.
I was t-boned in broad daylight in a bike lane.. with hi-vis clothes.
I clearly remember seeing the driver look -straight through me- before driving out into me.
I remember thinking 'you f**ker!' then.. 13 days in hospital, elbow/face reconstructions.. etc etc.

My point is.. always ride as if there are absolutely no lights on you.. as if you are invisible, as if no car has seen you.. and if every side street may have a car coming out of it.

Apart from that.. I think have several cheaper lights pointed back at you, and your bike, then the road.. some flashing, some not.. be a mobile discotech!. During the day I've considered having a massive red scarf/flag I can wave as I go thru intersections =p… or some sort of sign saying 'stop you f'n mofo's!'.

It's amazing how invisible bike riders are in brisbane.

    • I've got old crappy headlights pointed forward at 45% and and sideways at 90% so I'm lit up like a christmas tree to try to reduce the number of cars that attempt to turn right across traffic into me or hit me coming out of a side street - it's reduced some potential near misses cases where the car starts turning / leaving the side street, then slams on their brakes.

  • yep stitchy that is the best advice you could give any bike rider i am always scanning around me ready to brake, esp for cars that fly out of side streets. sorry to hear about your crash it's good you have gotten back on your bike again.

    • As a non-cyclist, I think that bike riders are crazy to travel on roads. Cycling at the side of a road, whilst being constantly overtaken by cars & trucks, some of which whizz past only a few inches away? no thanks.

I wouldn't walk down the gutter of a busy road for fear of being hit by a car. But cycling down one, is for some reason considered to be ok… because there is a sense of entitlement: 'cyclists should be able to use the roads'.

As a cyclist, you are really risking your life by travelling on the road. But if you must, then as Stitchy says… be constantly vigilant, just like a pedestrian should be when crossing a road or any area used by vehicular traffic.

      • I partially agree, cycling on some roads is very dangerous, however Stitchy was riding in a bike lane, so the road has been designed to take cyclists! I applaud councils who are doing this (I live in the ACT and cycle lanes are being actively installed everywhere), as it makes it safer for the cyclist, and also reduces frustration for the tin heads as they don't have to manoeuvre around obstacles.

That's really bad luck Stitchy though, I ride a motorcycle to work and have exactly the same problem, cars are always pulling out in front of my and I'm always have an escape route prepared. I have only once almost been t-boned by a 4WD who fortunately saw me, along with a quick swerve saw a collision avoidance.

  • I rigged my Led Lenser P7 but I just found drivers started beeping at me too much I spose 190 odd Lumens its abit extreme but that only cost me $99 lol

But this is a good price for a light setup they always seem too charge alot hence why i made my own

    • Those P7's look great, but 120 hours of illumination of 4xAAA batteries? That's pretty amazing…

    • I run a Fenix LD2 in strobe mode (I think approx 180 lumens), and yes, it does annoy some drivers - but then I know they've seen me.

  • You can get this for a similar price on ebay, but it's shipped from USA

  • Well I've bought one. Puts my cycling commute cost up this year to around $500 for tires, service, light, etc. $10 a week to get to and from work overall. $140 to get home more safely at night is pretty cheap.

Will helmet mount it so I've got where I'm looking illumination.
